Letus Extreme w/ OCT-19 and Lomo optics

Hey all,

I recently migrated from a M2 rig and Zeiss/Contax primes to the LX with OCT 19 mount to use my Lomo lenses and so far am very happy with the setup. I've used the Lomos for years with my Russian 35mm gear and it's great to be able to use them on my HVX with the Extreme. Here's a few images of my current rig which includes the Redrock rod system from my M2 setup as well as a newly acquired and modified Cavision system.

And for fun I also rigged my Lomo 20-120mm T3.2 Zoom on the LEX. Needless to say a bit bulky and heavy to be practical.

I'll be shooting some tests in the coming days but from what I can see thus far the LEX works very well with the cinema primes which just didn't work on the M2.

Cheers,

Woo that's a massive rig, but nice looking regardless.

Please show us some footage asap! I know SOTTY used some LOMO glass on his M2 and I was quite impressed, gonna be even better when used with the LEX.

very nice i can't wait to get mine with the lomo mount .

did you test your wide angle lenses for vignetting? cuz that was my problem with the m2 .

On Vignetting-- You really have to adjust for the lens, it looks like. Even with a 70-210 strapped to the Letus I have to go back to figure out where it vignettes, but that's not really much more than knowing your equipment.

HVX sweet spot (on mines) with the Letus seems to be 27.3 on the zoom dial. Anything more than that you're safe with, anything less (I've bumped it back on accident) you'll start seeing dark corners.

Those Lomo's look very nice. Where'd you get your lens support? That must be a heavy piece of glass it's holding.

That's the standard Russian lens support cradle for the 20-120 zoom. The only custom part is the 15mm runner for the rods. The original Russian runner was more of a dovetail setup for the Konvas/Kinor baseplate.

Thanks. I shot some quick test footage today. I hope to get it online tonight.

Stay tuned.

i need to find the same type of lens support for my canon 25-120mm oct-19 mount .

Try www.rafcamera.com. Raphael is a great guy and often has odd support parts in stock. If he doesn't he can probably send you in the right direction. Do you have a Konvas or Kinor?

no konvas or kinor ,i was using my lomo lenses withn the m2 which i sold for not being able to use my 18mm ,22mm and 28mm because of the vignetting now im planning on buying the letus extreme hoping to be able to use my wide angle lenses .
yes rafael is a very honest good guy i bought few things from him in the past .

how's your wide angles lenses working out on the letus extreme ?

My wides are working very well with the extreme. The only issue is the ccd offset in my HVX that the EX can't seem to compensate for. I really hope the mad scientists over at the adapter place can come up with a solution for this as it forces me to zoom in a bit farther than I'd like. Anyway, I'm currently compressing some test footage and will start a new thread when it's done. Cheers.

Hi Ian:

Nice looking rig. Can you post a couple of closeups of the two rod bases? I like how you have them setup but I can't quite tell exactly how you have it setup, what RR part touches which Cavision part.

Thanks!

Dan

That's a Bogen double articulated arm with one section removed and a mini ball head mounted for the monitor. It's light and very rigid. I can mount the marshall in any position without fear of it slipping.

Ian:

I get the articulated arm part but how is it attaching to the HVX's handle? Do you have one of those VF Gadget HVX handle doohickeys? Could you also shoot a CU of that part of it? It looks like a very workable setup.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

My setup is actually really simple. The Cavision support screws onto the Redrock quick release plate and mounts on the RR support base. This gives a great point to balance the rig.

The Cavision support has its vertical adjustment set very low- just about 1/2". I actually had to remove 2"from the vertical support bracket to allow it to sit flush with the RR quick release. I really like having a second set of 15mm rods for other accessories like batteries and receivers.

As to the articulated arm mount on the HVX, it's just the camera mount that comes with the Bogen double articulated arm. This distributes the weight of the arm/monitor over a larger area on the HVX's handle and puts far less stress on the 1/4 threads and the handle itself. I didn't want so much strain on the hotshoe or the threaded mount and this just seemed like a good solution.

I hope this all makes sense- just wrapped a 14 hour day.
