Letus Extreme mini...mini review!

That's brilliant Michael. I want the sun to come up so I can reshoot this test. Not doing the combo any favours! WIll try again tomorrow. Although I have a long planned for short that is being filmed on the ex1 and extreme tomorrow too!

p.s. I love the gloom sometimes. Its just the rain that makes it hard to shoot in! If you fancy swapping then I am up for it. Always wanted to live in LA! If anyone wants to put me up...

You probably don't have a mini-SD card installed. You have to have one installed in order for the half-press photo button to display the aperture/shutter info.

Hi Philip,

Looks like you're one of the few lucky boys who has ALL of the toys :-) And your footage looks great as usual....

Quick question, how far are you zoomed in on the HV20? There's no numerical scale, but on mine, I'm zoomed just a little bit past the 50% mark on the zoom bar with the Letus Extreme. Apparently, you don't need to zoom in as much with the Letus Mini and I'm just curious.

Looking forward to playing a little 'catch up' when I get my EX1 soon... BTW, the HV20 is actually a pretty cool little camera once you get the hang of all the slightly cumbersome workarounds.

Thanks!

Leo

Great. While we are at it, we can swap cameras too...

There is plenty of work here. (Unless you are a screenwriter at the moment). Unfortunately, there you may have to do fewer, artsy BBC pieces about comparative religion and more day to day shooting for things like 'Celebrity Fit Club 3".

The gloom is looking better and better....

yes you need a miniSD card in your camera for it to work. i was soooooooooooooooo tired when i did that :D i'd been awake for something like 40 hours so i forgot to mention the miniSD card.

it's a bit strange that this is probobly the most watched video i've ever done and hardly anybody knows it's me... :D

A will have to buy one. Thanks guys. But in the meantime can I still get proper aperture control without one.

I couldn't compare the extreme on the HV20 compared to the mini on the HV20. I also have only used it once. I will try it all again when I get the card and try for some better footage. It was the gain that was putting me off. I was on cine mode not shutter priority. Not sure what that actually is (cine mode that is!)

Yes, you can still get proper aperture/shutter/gain control without a card inserted but it will take some work as outlined in this tutorial by Barry Green: http://dvxuser.com/jason/hv20/ However, it's much, much easier when you do have a card in.

Cine mode on the HV20 is a fully automatic exposure setting with what appears to be some hidden settings that allow for greater dynamic range and better lower light performance. There's some pretty lively debates on which gives better results: Tv mode or Cine mode. I use the Cine mode mostly because it produces the most neutral image for post-processing. Stu Maschwitz gives a nice summary of it here: http://prolost.blogspot.com/search?q=taming+the+toy.

Cheers,

focussing cog

a bit brave to put the hv20 on tripod with that weight on it's lens thread don't you think?
... i'm afraid to try, without holding the mini for support - which causes unwanted shake. so looking at getting some rails before i put it all on sticks. do you think they are needed?

just wondering, where did you get that cog that you use to focus with?

Sorry for late reply Charles. That's a redrock focus gear for the follow focus. Yes it is a bit brace and it really still needs rails unfortunately.

With regards to the aperture control method, I am assuming I have to do this every single time I turn the camera back on. Correct?

Ugh, and unfortunately the answer is, yes :-(

You also have to do it every time you switch back from the play mode. However, at least it always stays in MF mode in both cases.
