Letus Extreme Grain?

For the record you can go above an f4... but that's the point at which you have to be careful.. using HD monitors to check results.

When shooting clear blue sky the vibrating pattern can show up... like may posts say.. ND to keep the shutter low...

My guess is that you have a defective unit.

I wish I could be more help in figuring out your problem.

I'm not sure if taht video is the best example because I really don't see the ground glass grain. I see a lot of compression noise or noise in general, but no vibrating ground glass.

Better compressed video? Try Vimeo.

If you have an f4 lens to begin with you may also have a smaller rear element or some other effect which exacerbates the problem. I had similar problems on a Brevis CF3 which is more sensitive to grain and 2.8 was the threshold. It worked fine with a 2.8 prime, but not with my 2.8 zooms.

Dang well that is frustrating. I just got out my 50 and 85, no problems. 17 is another story. I have a 24 but my 17-40 can do macro and it is such a good lens. I guess I gotta look into something else.

Again thanks for everyone's input. I leave thursday for 7 weeks so I needed to get this problem zapped quick.

I have had the same problem all the way with the LEX. If you go above F4 you are stuffed. You get a mottly pattern in the sky or on a flat evenly lit surface.

Never had thios problem with the Brevis or Redrock M2. I will have to wait and see when the Ultimate comes out, together with decent pricing, for me to switch over and the LEX will head for Ebay or the classifieds. There's no real solution around this problem. NDs help a bit but not much.

I love my 17-40 f4L on a LEX, so nice :D

Yes that lens is absolutely gorgeous when used on the camera and my canon 5d. Everything is so clear and beautiful. Just have a problem with it when I go above f4 cause it is so wide. It really focuses on that grain for some reason.

Yeah I am just staying f4 and below. It sucks, but 90% of the stuff I shoot I want the depth of like 2.8-4 anyways. I love me some depth.

i use a nikon f2.8 17-35mm on my lex and it is perfect. f5.6 is my limit. Obviousy the new ultimate doesnt have these issues but as long as a previous poster said keep an eye on stuff f5.6 upwards you will be fine

Oh I bet that is a sweet lens, 17 at 2.8. Rad.
I have seen a lot of your stuff recently. I am a fan.
I am out doing a documentary for 6 weeks and I decided on the Letus. Stoked to be using it.

bump.
any updates on the "mottly" pattern. I seem to get this especially using the EX-1 even at 4.0 on evenly lit blue surfaces etc. Does my Letus need factory adjustments, or can I do this myself?

I'm seeing the same thing with my newly acquired LEX. The motty pattern upon closer examination looks like the grains are vibrating in only one direction. I also can't quite achieve infinity focus. The ground glass needs to be a touch closer to the mount. I have a feeling these 2 problems might be related. Can anyone help? Thanks.
