Letus Extreme, Canon A1, Frame Grabs

I took my dad down to the park today to help me test out my new rig. You can see it here. I have more thoughts on the gear after today's use. I will post them later. I just wanted to share some frame grabs.

UPDATE: I cut together some of the footage from the camera test. You can view it here.

Since he was wearing black and it was noon, there is a wide range in some of these shots. I shot 'flat' (default settings) and then just lowered the blacks a touch. No other corrections made.

Lenses (Canon EF):
50 1.4
100 Macro 2.8
Zoom 28-135 3.5

(For some reason when I posted to Flickr, all of the photos went a little soft. Not sure why. Maybe because I let Flickr resize my grabs. I am going to double check my source. This is weird.)

Here is a shot on my 50mm

Then I zoomed in on the ground glass (in camera) to 100. Just to see the range I can get with my 50mm.

Lastly, here is an interesting comparison. Shot on my still camera ( Canon 40d) in the same environment.

Thanks guys. I'll have to remember to thank my dad for his wardrobe selection. It worked out well.

I am happy with the footage. I just compressed a 720p version to stream through my Xbox to my TV. It looks great even at 46in across compressed to H264. If you guys have an Xbox 360, you should try streaming your stuff through it. It is fun.

Now if I could just get my rig straightened out. None of my parts play nice with each other. My indiRails, infiFocus keep bumping against my Letus when I change lenses, etc. Then there is the DvRig which still needs to be dialed in. They are all good products (I think), it is just hard getting them integrated to work well with each other on the fly. It has been three days of tweaking and I am still not really there.

Hi Michael,
Great footage, any chance you could post some in higher resolution, maybe couple of sec.
I still can't decide whether to buy Sony EX-1, from what I see it looks equal to footage posted by Phil Bloom on Sony EX-1 forum, I actually like Canon colors better. Your dad looks great, the park reminds me of the stairs I used to walk on the 4th further up!

Also about latitude, if you use cinegamma 2, and black stretch, there possibly will be more detail in sky?

I have not used the EX but I can tell you that I paid a lot of money to add a HD monitor and a tapeless option to my A1. Those are both things you may not need with the EX. If I had to choose today, I may go with the EX but, again, I have not used it. I am guessing that Philip's footage would exceed what this camera is capable of - he is also a very talented guy. The low light performance on the EX looks amazing. Plus, the codec is more robust than HDV. In my mind, the EX is the camera to beat at the moment.

Palisades park was beautiful today. My dad is almost 83. It's nice to spend time with him. Yes, the '4th street stairs', they are brutal.

There is a link to the video at the top of the thread. Also, I have rendered a 720p version (H264). If you email me (via my website), I will send you, or anyone who requests it, the link.

I love the A1's deep dark blacks. It is such a great camera especially for its price.

I keep telling myself that....then I look at all of the stuff I have added on to make it all work for me... Marshall monitor, Letus Extreme, FireStore.

I think I really wanted a tapeless camera with a hi-rez LCD and larger imaging chips. I do like what I have, it just has taken a lot of extra dough to make it happen.

I am interested to see what Canon comes up with as an entry into the tapeless world (an answer to the HVX and the EX). We'll see....

The Canon 100mm Macro is supposed to be one of their best lenses, but after seeing your zoomed in 50mm footage I'm wondering if I could get away with zooming in on my 85mm f/1.8... Guess I'll find out when I get my camera back.

Beautiful work...

Bob

I think you would be fine with that approach. You will be really surprised (pleasantly).

I do love the 100mm Macro. I don't have an 85 because I chose that instead. I tried the 85 and even the fancy $2,000 85 1.2, but I just feel that the 100 has this magic quality (for me).

On my adapter (for doc work) the 50 a fast and versatile lens.
