Letus Extreme and M2

So my friend brought his Extreme to a shoot of mine that I was doing with my HVX and M2. I installed his Extreme on my camera to check it out and I was amazed. The light loss was considerably less than with my M2. Has anyone tried a custom GG on their M2 inorder to get a better exposure? Maybe a thinner GG? What do guys think. I dont mind the inverted image of the M2, I have gotten used to the work flow, and I like its setup/ contruction and appearance (The Letus attached to the HVX with rails is ugly and awkward looking), so I wont be switching. I would just like to make my M2 better if possible.

Ugly and Awkward?! Sir those are fighting words! You really think the M2 lunchbox is a better look? Anyway as your your question I did try a custom glass but havn't had much luck. I know it can be done but maybe not by me. Thinckness really has little to do with it and its really more a matter of the grain size and structure. Also the M2 GG is also plastic and I think a true glass GG would do a better job. Theres lots of posts in the DIY section of people making their own GG though none that I've seen to replace the M2.

You've never used a P+S Mini 35 then.... setup looks the same

I'll take "ugly and awkward" looking over having to flip the image in post - :)

I think it's pretty subjective. I have an M2 and think it looks pretty ugly- a sort of birdhouse as someone else put it on these boards. it's a BOX sitting in front of your camera- how could they have tried less on the design!?!?

Check out the letus rigs in this section- some pretty nice looking setups there.

What makes it unattractive to me is the stepdown or stepup rails. From what I have seen of the rigs on here, with the camera mounted 4 inches above the rails, I doubt thier edge to edge is exact. Most of them seem to be precariously tilted or not aligned. Maybe its just the jury-rigged rail systems that people are cobbling together to make this thing fit on thier camera?

Currently I am trying to find a company that can cut a custom piece of ground glass for me. I think that a well made piece glass instead of plastic will make the difference.
As for my "lunch box", its utilitarian design suits me just fine. :)

This thread was started in an attempt to find a way to make my M2 eat less light, not for you guys to get all butt hurt over my personal opinion about the Letus. Does anyone have any creative input about the subject? Thanks

Well according to the M2 people they actually had a gg that used less light but decided not to use it because of light smearing issues. I say you ask them to release that as a secondary GG; the way Brevis does. The GG in the Redrock is pretty easy to change. The RR is easy, but ugly.
Oh and I use a circle glass cutter I got from a stained glass supplier. It takes a little practice but then you get perfect circles every time.

It doesn't look like the M2 will have a change in ground glass any time soon. They have the future product line laid out pretty visibly- the mattebox, the wireless ff, and the micro x... no ground glass mentioned.

My only advice is try shooting shutter 220d... it gets you a little more light and some say gets you a more film like shutter as many varicam users shoot at this shutter.

I agree, my Letus rig is dorky looking but the proof is in the picture. I can live with a dorky looking rig if it makes beautiful images.

I don;t know why people are getting bent out of shape for the awkward and ugly statement...to be honest...he's right. The extreme is an ugly and awkward setup but....at the end the picture quality is what really matters and from what I have seen, the Letus does deliver beautiful imagery!
