Is there even a point to getting a Letus Extreme for my DVX when it's not HD? The resolution really seems to make a difference with these adapters. Or should I just sell my DVX, get an HV30, beachtek and then buy a Letus?
Of course there is a point to it, what kind of question is that?
The hv20 takes a pretty picture but it will make your life miserable controlling it. Often times, HD is worthless. Im shooting a commercial on Red this wedensday and guess what they want it delivered on? DVCAM!
The dvx is a much better camera to have than the hv20.
I agree! There are people that I know that use their HVX200s and the P2 workflow to simply ingest Standard Definition footage. The DVX is a powerful camera. While the majority of people on this forum do shoot HD or HDV, there is still a huge place for SD in the world of film and television. I mean it has been the standard for years!
On an HV20... controlling things like aperture and focus are significantly more difficult. Also, keep in mind that the HV20 still shoots HDV to tape. Therefore you are still relying on a tape workflow. If you know your DVX stick with it! Don't go buy a Letus Ultimate or a P&S Technik adapter for your little DVX. By god don't do that for the HV20. The adapter market is widening by the day and there are plenty of good adapters out there. For instance, Redrock's M2 with microX is not scalable. You can shoot with the HD/SD achromat using cameras ranging from the DVX to the EX-1.
If you want an adapter, go for it! Keep cost in mind, but also functionality. You want your adapter to be able to scale up to your needs down the road. Flipping the image is probably a must if you're jsut getting started. Also try to get a follow focus unit and some nice lenses as well!
HD and lens adapters are separate matters. HD gives you higher resolution and lens adapters give you shallow DOF. A Letus on a DVX would be a very nice thing IMO, and the DVX's superior low light capability would be very welcome.
Letus and DVX together gives you a very pleasing image. Adding the letus won't, to the best of my knowledge, degrade your image. However, you will loose light - therefore adding noise and such - but nothing to bad.
I would save my money and stick with the DVX unless you NEED a High Def camera, and by "need it" I mean the camera will help you bring in money or your project calls for it (true 16:9, extra color space, SFX, etc etc) However, if your like me, always wanting a new camera because it improves your image a little, then I can tell you it ain't worth it. Think about it, how many thousands of HD consumer and pro consumer camera's, which produce beautiful images, have been bought and sold. Yet we've seen very few films "make it" that have been shot with those cameras. I can't say the same for the DVX. With that said, get a SCARLET when it comes out .
I have a DVX and an HVX, and they both produce different images. I prefer the DVX image, but the HVX has more pixels and I can do more with it in post.
I'm about to get an adapter, and I'm sure both cameras will be fighting over it.
Personally, I am way more impressed by proper use of shallow dof and focus control rather than high-def imagery. To me, this is one major component of what defines "cinematic".
I recently grabbed an M2 w/microX and a follow focus for my DVX. I'm just starting to practice with this gear and already love it. In my opinion, go with the adapter (of your choice).
