letterboxing in FCP

my footage is in 4:3.
what is the most efficient way to put a letterbox mask up so that all my video in the timeline plays with the letterboxing in the canvas window. it can be temporaqry for now.
is there a way that i can do that without having to render every shot?
 
Effect>Video Filters>Matte>Widescreen Matte. Change the ratio in the "filters" tab in the viewer if desired.
 
The problem with the widescreen matte filter is that you have to apply it to every shot, which is a pain in the ass when you start recutting and adding in new shots. I usually put a slug on the top layer, add mask shape filter, invert it and set it to 100 horizontal, 75 vertical. Everything below the slug will be letterboxed. Also, this makes reframing shots easy as all you do is push around the shot below the matte layer to where you want it.
