letterbox capture problems

So has no one else had this problem? The one where their computer thinks letterbox footage is 16x9 and captures it with a 1.2 aspect ratio? Even though all the capture settings are completely normal and have been working all year? I just dont get it, why now?! How do I fix this problem?! I'm pretty sure I've tried everything. I've re-installed FCP 4.5, no luck. Tried capturing through Premiere 6.5, no luck. It only seems to think its 16x9 footage when any type of DV is selected as the codec.

Any suggestions?

Are you viewing the footage in Windows Media Player? I had the same problem but it was fine on the DVD burned with the letterbox footage.

Yes, this happens to me when i capture 4:3 letterboxed material with the Matrox codec. Every letterboxed 4:3 file is flagged as a 16:9.

I use the Interpret Footage in Premiere Pro to solve this.

Click on the .avi-file in the Project Window and:
1. File > Interpret Footage
2. Check Conform to:
3. Change it to D1/DV NTSC (0.9)
4. Repeat on each .avi if necessary
5. Done!

Thanks for the replies guys. Of course I can can Interpret the footage and change the aspect ratio, but I would rather just have it capture normally. Like it used to.

Why did this get moved into the Premiere forum? I said I've ALSO tried using Premiere..haha. I'm on an apple by the way:). So Averdahl, you've found no other solution than to change the aspect ratio?

Thanks,

Yes, first time this happened i placed the captured .avi on the timeline and exported all of it as 4:3. The exported footage had the correct PAR so i imported it and used it in the project. But this process is time consuming and takes up disk space as well. And since the Interpret Footage works for me i stick with it. :)

So the "capture-to-export-to-import-and-edit" was not a brilliant idea even if it did the job.
