Let it snow

Mino

Northern Dreamer
If you count snowmen as a part of the overall population, Vancouver is going to double its population tomorrow morning:) It's snowing like crazy right now and we usually don't get a lot of snow. I read just a while back how El Nino was going to keep the western areas of north america warm and dry this winter. Fat chance! we are nearing record rainfall this season and now....Mega snow. Too bad I don't ski:)

About a foot on the roofs and stuff which is too much for this city, we only own one snow plough! It all turned slushy today and it's going down to -16 tonight according to the weather network, so there's going to be a lot of sideways stuff on the roads tomorrow. On the bright side I'll get to put a new entrance on the igloo were the polar bears were gnawing at it:)

I don't usually pose this question to another guy but...

How many inches, Mino?

Heh heh... to whom would you normally pose such a question? :)

Chris Farley as El Nino.

Have fun with the snow, 'El Mino'. :)

I almost hit a guy yesterday (sunday) while going down Willingdon. He was standing in the middle of the road trying to stop traffic because his buddy, driving a Civic with low-friction tires, was unable to get up the hill and was trying to turn around to go back down. unfortunately the guy was wearing all black and the hill was completely covered in sludge because of all the salt so my stopping distance was more than 50 meters. Going back up the same hill an hour later I spotted 3 stranded busses and over 10 abandoned vehicles in various states of garden invasion.

Where I come from (Norway) you have to take a mandatory class in driving on icy/slippery surfaces before you get your licence. In Vancouver people don't even seem to understand that summer slicks don't actually grip on ice and snow.

I love the snow but I wish there would be stronger rules for driving training here. Today I drove behind a guy who had over 4 inces of snow on the back of his car, over his rear lights and on his side mirrors. as a result he had no clue what was going on behind him.

I'll post some pics tomorrow. it's quite alarming.

And another thing: Almost all the schools were closed today. what for? a little bit of snow? I had to go to school in a blizzard with over 3 meters of snow outside when I was a kid. here everyone goes bonkers over snow that barely covers your feet.

needless to say I'm not impressed

*actually knows how to handle a car in the snow*

When I was in college (Siberacuse, NY) we'd sit up in a dorm room with a good view of this big hill next to the campus, and place bets on how far cars would make it up, before they'd start sliding backwards and sideways, back down...

...good times.

I put myself through college delivering pizza in Edmonton where winters are minus 37 and snow is huge so I'm a seasoned snow driver even with my summer slicks. Its all in how you flow with it and your use of power along with knowing that stopping must be a calculation in your choice of speed and following distance. Not to say that things don't bust loose sometimes and force you to fight to stay on the road with any sense of dignity. Vancouver is not set up for snow as we so seldom get any. There are people here who don't do too well on dry roads so when the shite hits the fan, it's pretty much a free for all. I saw one guy on the way home hosing the snow off his car with a garden hose...It is his destiny to learn a harsh lesson in the morning after a night of minus 20 with wind chill:)

Yep LOL...That brings back memories:)

Hey Morten...Just a thought but minus twenty wind chill could freeze your car pretty bad if you park on the street with no anti freeze. I'm underground so It should all be good.

Yep, didn't matter where you pointed the camera this morning, when you pushed the shutter release you got this kind of shot. The first one of downtown with the snow covered mountain backdrop really had to be seen, it was breath taking!
