On what camera?

If one is referencing these lenses to 'standard 35mm' considerations, the 50mm is the 'normal' lens, and would be useful for shots that one wants to take in some amount of 'the scene', like full length shots of people or rooms, that is a Wide Shot.

The 105mm is a 'portrait' lens, and so, would be good for 'head shots' or from shoulders to top of head, type shots. Or where one wants detail, but much less distortion than the 50mm. That is Close Up or Extreme Close Up.

I've not used an 85mm on 35mm, but when I did 4x5 I used a 210mm lens, which is approximately the same as sort of angle of view, and that was to lessen any distortion on architectural shots that a shorter lens may introduce. Otherwise it would be used for a Medium Shot.
