Lensbabies

I once contacted TimurCivan about this very same question because I knew he played with some lensbabies some time ago. He told me they're not worth the money at all.

He told me they're not worth the money at all.

Interesting. I was looking to pick one up. They seem relatively cheap (200). I did a Flickr search and found lots of interesting photos that seemed to be pretty good.

I wonder if there is something that would be worth the money (if you wanted that effect). Did he suggest any alternatives?

so basically, it plays with the backfocus to selectively focus on one particular area of the image, distorting the rest?

Somewhat like that. Chances are, if you'd ever use that effect, it'd be in a really rare situation. I'd rather rent it when i need it for that 1 or 2 shots that'll ever call for it, rather than cough up for it and let it collect dust until i need it. I also realise that with stuff you own, you'd be more compelled to use it more, and as a result might use it in more shots that would be deemed necessary, and it'll quickly outlive the novelty - kinda like how some people immediately set about getting the thinnest depth of field possible once they get their hands on a 35mm adaptor

Its a poor man's swing tilt lens. I tried it out and the client actually used the shot to open a piece;. However i decided it was too limited for general use on an adapter.

Its a lovely afect but the field of view that is actually sharp is generally too small to be much good except for very special effects - all in all its just too soft. There are some people who have used them on adapters and love them.

Not as good as a real swing tilt lens. If you do alot of music videos you might get more use out of it.
