Lens to be used on P+S mini35

I have never used the P+S tecnick adapter, however I have used 35mm cameras before. I am a little skeptical about the lenses I should use on this adapter. Does it take zoom lenses?

Anyways, could someone give me a little suggestion as to what lenses I should use. I was thinking a 50mm prime lense and a 20-100mm zoom lens.

Any lens you want so long as you stay consistent with the mount. Zooms are fine. :)

The idea behind and the beauty of the Mini35 is that you get the same Field of View and Depth of Field as you would on a 35mm Cine Camera. You choose your lenses and focal lengths exactly as you would if you are using a 35mm Arri, Moviecam, etc.

One difference is that I would suspect that due to the lower resolution of the system that differences between the images of modern high quality primes and zooms would be very difficult (if not impossible) to see--- but that is an opinion, I have not done or seen tests.

Thanks for the replies. Since i will be renting lenses, which brands do you suggest? I will be renting from Boston Camera (http://www.bostoncamera.com/cat35lns.htm) I'm skeptical about using zoom lenses due to the resolution loss, anyone have any experiences with them?

Re: Lens to be used on P+S mini35

Don't even think twice about the resolution loss. A proper 35mm lens is designed to deliver a crisp sharp image at (approximately) 6000x4000 resolution (a 35mm still frame). When mounted on a mini35, you're going to be shooting a DV-sized 720x480 frame, and even that will be softened by about 25% by having to be shot through the ground glass... resolution won't be an issue (unless you're using a junk 35mm lens, that is).

Re: Lens to be used on P+S mini35

^^ I'm also referring to general cinematography. I know that some DP's hate using zoom lenses and others just love them. So, in my planning of selecting lenses, Boston Camera suggested that i get individual prime lenses 20-85mm's and additional zoom lenses (bringing the bill slightly over $1000 per day just for lenses). I know that rental houses like to sucker people into paying more than necessary. So, my question is, why do i need all those prime lenses if i can just use a zoom lens that covers all these focal lengths?

Re: Lens to be used on P+S mini35

Prime lenses will be sharper, lighter, and faster (i.e., transmit more light).

For a mini35 application, you probably don't need "sharper", since it won't be able to resolve that additional sharpness. Lighter won't necessarily be a factor either, if you're not going handheld. But "faster" is a *major* advantage. If the zoom lens you're getting is a T1.3 or so, it's a non-issue, but if you're comparing a set of T1.3 SuperSpeeds against a T2.8 zoom, there's a massive difference, and you'll realy be wishing you had the SuperSpeeds (unless you're only shooting at noon in the sun).

Re: Lens to be used on P+S mini35

Zooms used as "variable primes" are usually slower too - lots more glass involved in the focal train. Also, zooms can introduce some refraction issues with lights repeating through the train - like the Photoshop lens flare effect.

I'll defer to the lens specialists already lurking in this thread to clarify and expand on these observations!
