It makes sense to me.
Lenses, when pushed to their max always loose quality. Even though 96 is not much less than 99, it is still less then max.
It is a little odd, but within reason.

Using an SLR for example or a Bolex lens, I have never had this issue...Infinity was Infinity?

Ok at least I'm not alone in this, I thought maybe my camera got bumped and knocked the lens.
Maybe that's what the "clunk" is :

Well, one it is possible the lens in your SLR is of higher quality then the DVX's. Also, you may not notice it as much through a finder (especially if you are not looking through a ground glass) because it is not exactly WYSIWYG. Also, if you were to enlarge the image you would start to see the degradation more.
Infinity is when the lens reaches a point that everything about 40ft. and beyond will be in focus.

I have noticed this as well.
Perhaps INfinity is farther than we think.
I don't mean that as tongue and cheek as it sounds, but, maybe the DVX INfinity is farther than what we are actually seeing?

I don't think so :-[ as where I live I am able to zoom all the way on the lens, and then slightly rack focus on a mountain ridge 3/4 of a mile away.
Definitly soft after #97.
I guess it's time for me to buy the Century Focus Ring.

93 is the stock infinity level with the stock lens. However, when you start using Diopters and other glass infront of the lens, the infinity point changes, so its nice that Pansonic gave a couple extra points.

I own a 75-205mm zoom for my SLR camera. Zooming out to 205mm, and focusing at the infinity mark on the lens barrel doesn't give me an in focus shot. I have to back off on the mark slightly to prevent a slightly out of focus shot.
A decent prime lens won't have this problem, because focus at infinity with a prime isn't a function of moving lens elements and their groupings. The lens elements in a zoom move in groups to accommodate the various focal lengths and attempt to maintain focus throughout the zoom range.
Sometimes, an optimal grouping isn't always achieved.
Jarred, whether or not Panasonic did this deliberately to accommodate extenders/adapters, I don't know. Interesting to think that they did.
