lens question

if i have a 35mm f/1.8 lens and want a zoom lens to match the quality I would have to get a zoom lens that is f/1.8 as well, correct? And would a zoom lens thats, lets say, 3.5-5.6 be a huge difference in depth of field?

Just put the stop of the 1.8 on f 3.5 and you have your answer
