Lens question

I bought my camera as part of a kit. I got a good deal and I am happy with the camera, case and filters. That stuff alone was worth the money so I'm not complaining, but...

The cheap wide angle lens that came with the camera doesn't seem to add much real estate to the shot, maybe 10%. It's supposed to be a 0.5, so shouldn't it add more? On the upside, the DVX is pretty wide on it's own, so that's a good thing.

The cheap (but in a pretty wooden box!) 2.5x zoom I got is even weirder. When I put it on, it looks like I'm looking through the wrong end of a telescope. I can see the inside of the lens, with a little circle at the end. When I zoom all the way in, it does magnify the image, but you can still see the slightest remanant of the inside of the lens in the corners. Is that how a zoom is supposed to work (I doubt it)? Am I doing something wrong (More Likely)? Or is it nothing more than a pretty paperweight in a shiny wooden box (That's where my bet is)?

Like I said, they were a bonus, so I'm not complaining, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this. Thanks.
