Lens issue, is there a name for this?

I got the chance to play around with a 35mm adaptor this weekend. I used two Arri lenses that were pretty nice and a cheap 85mm cannon off my dad's camera. When I focused the Arri lenses, everything was fine, when I focused the cannon, the picture zoomed a little. About 10% larger/smaller. Why does the lens do this? Is there a name for this so I know how to avoid it if I do go with a 35mm adaptor and start buying lenses?

It's called "breathing." Still lenses will suffer more breathing because it's simply not an issue when taking stills. Cine lenses designed for film work are engineered to minimize this problem.

If want to go the cheap route and get still lenses, how do I avoid this? Just pick up the lens and look through it and focus and watch the edges?

You can't avoid it with still lenses. Some will be better than other, you just have to try it out.
