Lens Hood Replacement vs Matte Box

Hi guys,

My HPX-170 recently was recently knocked over on my tripod during a shoot and luckily all that was damaged was the lens hood. The lens hood is completely destroyed and I have been very concerned about not having any shade or protection for my lens. I've considered ordering a replacement from panasonic, but I was also considering making the investment to a matte box instead. Does anyone use a matte box exclusively instead of a lens hood, would the filter capabilities be worth the extra hassle and weight at all times? I also shoot with the Letus Extreme and support rails, so it would be nice to use with that rig, but I don't always shoot with the adaptor. I read the FAQ and I'm thinking about going with the Redrock Micro Matte...

Anyways long time reader first time poster... thanks...and if anyone is looking for a 170 lens cap pm me and I'm sure we could work something out.

A matte box is very useful depending on what you're doing, but if it were me, I would get a replacement lens hood since there would be many times I wouldn't require a matte box. Basically, get both if you need the matte box. In comparison to the cost of a good matte box, the lens hood will be very cheap.

Gear Dear matte box (a basic setup) might be a good all-purpose matte box to replace your lens hood, price isn't too bad.

I would tend to think, though, that you might have times where you get tired of the extra weight of rails+box, even if it's only a pound or two. In that case, yeah, the stock lens hood would do you well.

Also keep in mind your current situation...if your camera falls again like this, and there's damage to the matte box, that would certainly cost more to fix/replace. Of course, the Gear Dear matte box is modular, so depending upon the damage, you may only have to replace a piece or two.

Just thinking out loud.
