hi everyone,im lookin to buy a lens for my d40 but im not very good wit lenses,i mostly shoot live bands, what would be a good lens for this thats a a good price,my budget is $100.thank you :- )
That's a really tight budget...Honestly you wont be able to get much for that price, maybe a 50mm 1.8. Not sure if the DX is compatible with the D40, though.
I have a D40 and shot bands as I work in a music venue, $100 is pretty tight, I got a 300mm f4.5 manual lens and use that in fully manual mode. It works pretty nicely in manual mode once you get used to it. I think for live band work getting nice tight head and shoulder shots (for me) is what it is all about, and this lens lets me do it. I got it on ebay for about $70.
However, f4.5 is really really slow for live band coverage, as those stages are usually dimly lit interiors, so unless your on a tripod with a high ISO, etc, you wont get a very attractive image.
f4.5 is no so bad, if there is decent lighting, I use it happily without a tripod, I just use a 800 or 1600 iso rating. I agree it would be better to have a faster lens I have a manual f2 100mm which is useable for slightly wider images.

hey guys,ya i need a faster lens cuz the stock lens i got is too slow so i got to drop the shutter and the images get blurry,i need something wide thats faster than the stock lens, thanks for everything
my suggestion would be to go down to your local photo shop, and talk to them about it. If you can find a good place, like I have here, they will actually take a lens out of its box and let you mount it to see how you like it.
