ALWAYS have the UV filter on. It will help your picture quality (a little), but its main feature is to protect the camera's lense. UV filters are pretty cheap. I'll let someone more inclined to discuss filters explain the other 2, because I don't even have my DVX yet.
i know that the polarizer can make skies bluer and take glare and reflections off of windows and water. the fld i think is for shooting in flourescant lighting to take out the green and make it look more natural. it's probably just better not to use flourescant lighting, but if you're like me and you use what you've got, it's definitely an improvement. i'm sure there are better uses for these filters.
i'd like to know more about some filters to really bring out that sunny summertime look and some to create a darker, grittier feel--like 16mm.
Me too...I'm checking out the 72mm Tiffen Yellow 8 for B/W look with more of the dark colors crushed in camera vs trying to do it in post. Anyone have any options lens colors (Yellow,Red,Blue orGreen) for outdoor B/W simulated shots? Here is a sample of what I saw from tiffen's site-Click on before and after demo.
I probably have that same kit that you got with the camera. I always have the UV filter on for the above reasons (protect the lens...) and have never used the other two.
I'm wondering if the desired effects of using the other filters (that we are discussing, not expensive ones) couldn't just be achieved by maybe the CHROMA PHASE or CHROMA LEVEL settings.
I am still getting to the point where I haven't tested these out yet, but have made some charts to get a feel for what some of these settings will do. If I do discover anything I'll come back here and repost, but I'm sure some more experienced shooters can answer this question.
