Lens Brand?

i posted all those prices based on what i paid on ebay. i just bought a whole set over the last week. these are current going rates.

here are the auctions i won....

135mm f2.5

85mm f1.8

50mm f1.4

28mm f2.8

i had this exact same set before and i sold them with my old redrock m2. i just got the new m2e and bought all the same lenses.

i also have a 200mm f2.8 that i kept from before and i am currently looking for a FL 14mm

An excellent set of lenses, some of my favorites. You have to dig to find the older 2.5 version of the 135 instead of the usual 2.8, nice find! I waited years until I scored a cheap 85/1.2 Aspherical. That's another case where the difference between the 1.8 and the 1.2 is night and day, but in this case the usual 5X price difference makes the better one unaffordable by normal humans!

What about Canon FD zoom lenses? My friend recommended I get a 70-210mm zoom lens but I haven't been able to find any that are Canon FD.

Canon made a bunch of zooms, though none of them are as stellar as the prime lenses. One problem is the fairly dim max aperture they all have.

The 80-200/f4 is the closest to what your friend suggested. It's a decent enough lens, but I've always preferred using the 100/2.8 or 200/2.8 lenses instead.

The 85-300/f4.5 zoom gives you a very useful range, but it's a bit of a beast of a lens. I believe the later version was 75-300.

The 35-70/f2.8 (not the 3.5 version) is actually a nice little lens, letting you get from slightly wide to slightly telephoto, and the sharpness is not half bad. But that 2.8 aperture is at the 35 end; it transitions to 3.5 at the 70 end, which is going to be a problem if you're zooming in a continuous shot.

The 35-105/f3.5 is generally considered insanely sharp, but again there's that lousy max aperture causing problems unless you have lots of light.

All of those are "two-touch zooms" meaning the focus is on one part of the lens, and the zoom control is on another. This is preferred for movie use, since it's usable with a follow-focus unit, etc. Canon did make a few "one-touch" also known as "push-pull" zooms, but as far as I know those are all fairly junky, made and sold cheaply to appeal to casual shutterbugs who were trying to get the most flexible camera for the least money.

Canon has made some extremely nice zooms in the EF lens line... I guess they finally put some effort into it after all those years!

If you have to have a zoom, then this would be the lone exception to the "only buy Canon brand" rule: Vivitar made some fairly nice zooms in FD mount in their "Series I" line.

Thanks Duncan, very helpful stuff. I'm guessing they won't be easy to find but I will look into those Vivitars you mentioned.

Hi I've Got a Question...

I Have a Sigma 30mm HSM Nikon Mount... I would like to use it a 35mm Adapter like others have done with DLSR lenses.

But i can't seem to "LOCK" the F-Stop with my DSLR Camera like others are doing.

Is it that the Sigma wont allow this?

Thank.
