Legality of filming minors? Street interviews? Guidance requested

I'm new to video. I've got a few ideas for some street interviews that I'd like to do, some specifically target youth (14-17). What are the laws related to this? And when do they change? When is it ok, when is it not, when would I need to gain consent of their legal guardian?

I'm NOT trying to be creepy, I just want to know. I'm in Oregon, but how much matters on State law and how much on Federal?

What would be the best way to find out what the laws on this are?

L!

no ideas about laws in Oregon but here in Europe I need the parents to sign the release form as well as the kids...

i'm no lawyer, but i always thought you had to have parental consent if they're under 18. it seems like you would be opening yourself up to a potential lawsuit by filming someone's children without permission.

Ask your lawyer.

My understanding is that it changes when we're talking about news reporting, but I can tell you that large portions of my work in the industry has involved tracking down people caught on camera that we didn't have a release from.

I am about to do some shooting of minors, and parents will be the first to know. Law or no law, I do NOT want to get shot.

You need a release, and a minor cannot legally execute a release. And watch out filming kids in general, lest you be accused of worse.

So I'm still curious of the laws related to this. And the differences in personal vs. other types. I'm sure millions of people have videos of other people children. Videos of parks, pools, concerts, public events.

How do these laws differ from photography with children?
