Can anyone tell me some legal issues with filming a public building for example a scene setting on a "public" hospital,, using a side where you can see the name on the building or using a side without the name. or not at all

Or any other building. not a business type. but like libraries, post office, police dept.. things like that...

without permission... all of these would be ext. shot..

Thanks
Terry

You need to be specific about where you are on the planet. The general rule in North America was traditionally that if you're shooting from a public space you don't need to worry but the last decade has seen lots of changes. And in other parts of the world, it's not necessarily the same. I understand Paris, for example, requires permits to shoot many famous landmarks such as the Eifle Tower, Arc de Triumph, Notre Dame, etc

I am in Ohio.. I was thinking things such as an entrance scene using our public hospital .. things like that..

You need to get a release from the owners of the hospital. Your "public" hospital may be owned by a private company. Even it it's publicly owned by the city or state, you'll still need a release.

I'm not clear on the public buildings situation when you have a proper permit, but if your including the location as an actual location you need to be careful about other things. Using a real business as a fictional location can get you into legal issues. This is a vague response for two reasons: the first is that context matters in a huge way with these sorts of things. The second is that I'm not your lawyer- no one on this board is, and if you want accurate answers with accountability that's one of the only ways to get it. Local film commission contacts and reading relevant legal codes are the other ways.
