our production is suppose to start sometime around the summer and the story im writing right now requires the use of firearms in the streets where the public may see it. well we will be using airsoft guns since thats the closes thing to a real gun and i was wondering what legal issues that we may face using it in the streets. do we need to go ask the city for a permit of some sort? anyone have any similar experience?

Everywhere else in the world, kids regularly shoot each other up with airsoft in the street! Only in America would you likely to evoke a response from SWAT for doing so. Get a permit and if possible, have a cop assigned to attend the shoot:D

Actually, according to Wikipedia there are restrictions -- often quite severe -- on the possession and use of realistic Airsoft guns in public places in the following countries:

Australia
Bulgaria
Canada
China
Czech Republic
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Hong Kong
Hungary
Israel
Italy
The Netherlands
Poland
Portugal
United Kingdom

Depends on the place. One way would be to look for a cop nearby, go to him and tell him that you'll be doing a scene with a fake gun, and ask him if it's ok. I did this before and the cop actually stood by as a guard until the scene was complete. If there is no cop nearby, get a permit, whatever you need to hire one to stand by and watches you. Then put up big signs telling people that there is a film in progress. The point is you don't want anyone calling the police on you, because then you'll land in serious trouble.

In my area, the proper procedure is to call the police station and hire an officer to oversee the shoot. This is really the only way you can be sure that you won't get any trouble from it.
