Left Turn Signal

Hi, guys...

The name of my Inc. is Left Turn Productions, and I wanted to make a logo animation at the head of my new film: a vertical traffic signal with the lights going down sequentially red>yellow>green>green left arrow blinking, with the words "Left Turn Productions" next to it (possibly blinking or steady green). I am admittedly a "nuts and bolts" editor, but I do have decent knowledge of Motion and Photoshop (the programs I would need to use)

Thanks all.

Is there some reason you don't want to simply film an actual traffic light then add lettering in post?

Get a stock photo of a light. Or find(or model) a 3d model of it and render it. Paint it/touch it up in Photoshop it as necessary to fit your style/requirements. Then use compositing software (I guess for you that would be Motion) to light up the lights and put up the text. I've never seen Motion but in AE this wouldn't be that difficult. Worst case the lit up version of each light would need to be made in Photoshop as well(if you can't create a mask and apply effects to it to glow/light it with Motion).

above idea is good one in my opinion. but i am at this time ..a dedicated practical effects person. so in my opinion you should just find an actual traffic light, and either film in a static shot going through its cycle, and then simply cut from whatever color ligght you want to start with to the next color you want, to the next, to the end, or whatever. use masking with multiple layers of the footage and make all lights come on at once.. whatever.

or simply tripod a still cam and snap a pic for every light you want when it comes on. .. then animate whatever sequence you want from those stills.

either way your basically doing the same thing. i would use an angle where the background will not change .. watch shadows/sky/reflections/ect.

that would be the most realistic way to have full control over whatever the light is doing.

however if your looking to use some sort of stock art or animated stop light the idea in the post above would work beatifully. either way using a real or cartoon/cpu animated light, you could incorporate that into a larger animation within AE if your looking for some form of motion graphic work in the end. you would just mask the background off the real light is all. should be simple either way.

LOL, no! He means it's either stop or go. There is no such thing as a "caution" light, at least the way the drivers there think.

Here, in LA, "Yellow" means "Go really fast before it turns red"

Yeah, in New York, the lights change really fast, so you always get caught by those damn cameras.

Green = GO
Yellow = Go faster
Red = Don't get caught
