LED lights...

Besides the much talked about LITEPANELS LED on camera light what are some other LED on camera lights on the market? I only know of 2 others which is the IDx3 and Frezzi Mini Fill which has 3 LED light bulbs in it.

Could LED lights be something of the future in terms of providing soft light? What about a fullsize Fresnel or Tungsten type light housing with LED lights inside?

I have one of those LED tatical flashlights that is only 6 inches long and that thing is bright as I don't know what and the beam is crazy long!

I make LED lights, although we are completely out of stock.
I use 'normal' 5mm LEDs as they offer MUCH easier manufacturing: the LUXEON (and such) LEDs are very briight, but to make NICE optics for them a substantial investment has to be made.

(We're making them like crazy again, and will have stock beginning in a week or so, fully stocked in about two to three weeks.)

Oh, and something else: LEDs aren't quite as good as many believe. I mean, the often quated 100000 hours burn time might be accurate, BUT after 100000 hours the things might be only putting out about 10% (or so) of their original luminosity.
They are also not quite as HEAT FREE as some suggest. But these things CERTAINLY have their place in the lighting options!

There are a few folks on here (one in particular) who keeps rubbishing the effectivness of LED lights, and that is unfortunate, as I have just returned from an extensive shoot in the South Pacific where I only had our own LED lights as lighting, and I was VERY VERY impressed myself with their usefulness and usability.

I could post much more technical stuff here if anyone is interested.

LED, Fluorescent, and HMI are wonderful technologies. Primarily because they use 20-30% of the power requirements of tungsten, emit low heat which is great for tight quarters, change color temp less drastically when dimmed, and in the case of LED's (due to PCM circuitry) use 50% less power when dimmed to 50%. Also, all are capable of ~5500k output without gelling. :)

You know, I'd be happy for them to use the same amount of power and cost 50% less instead.

I love Fluorescents and LEDs...but the cost is kind of prohibitive.
I'd love to see some lower priced options. Seems like a lot of people would.
I'm surprised we haven't seen more on the market.

Are the components really that much more expensive?

Just thought I would jump in and let you know what is coming soon.

Check out www.zylight.com. This is a brand new product we are introducing at NAB in April. They will be available for sale at the end of April.

It outputs 5600K or 3200K soft white light. Fully dimmable. It outputs colors. Lots of them. Just turn the knob on the back and dial in what you like. 2 presets are provided to store your favorites.

It is an alternative to the LED lights available now and our beta testers love them. Put yourself on the mailing list at our site and we will keep you informed.

Thanks guys!

Chaz that's a pretty cool feature, to be able to dial in the right color. I saw your pics, and you're right, no more gels.

Users have found that its a fast solution for using color. Instead of running to your gel kit, putting spun on your 150 and then adding a colored gel, we offer a smaller fixture that has as much output wether you dial in light green or dark blue.

Its fast and easy and just another tool to use when you are lighting. Good luck vidled. As you know by now, its no small task.
