LED light, useful for filmmaking?

Hey all,

I'm looking to buy some accessories for my not-yet-arrived DVX, and I was thinking about a white LED light.

Because it is mounted to the accesory shoe on the cam, I was wondering, how useful is this item for filmmaking? Is it a harsh directional light, like what you see in the Blair Witch Project, or is it simply a way to brighten up a scene?

I don't want to buy something that's meant for nature videographers who want to spot owls at night, but it looks like it might in fact be meant as a quick and dirty way for a really low-budget filmmaker to save some money on a lighting setup. I can't find any definative information on the web one way or another...

Can anyone help me here? Thanks. :-)

i sometimes tape an LED flashlight to my dvx for effect. i used it on my last music video. it's not something you would use all the time unless you are doing a lot of night time run and gun stuff. it has a look for sure. the light is not harsh. it is actually really soft and pleasing. it has a strong blue cast but the dvx will w.b. to it. try it.

I used a led flash light for simulating the moon light and it worked very well. I also am looking into led camera lights because of the less power consumption.

Yowza! :-) What a product line!

I was just thinking of a little light that snaps on the DVX accessory shoe, and was wondering if it was only for still photogrpahy and interview videos, where I'd hope to use it to lighten up a dramatic scene where I can't bring a light kit with me.

And here's a side question: are there such things that allow you to hook up an "extention cord" to your accessory shoe? Say you wanna point a shotgum mic somewhere else, or in my case, want a simple lighting setup not teathered so close to the cam (still tethered, of course, but not attached as such), and you don't want to buy a seperate mic or light?
