Lectrosonics 100 Series

Yeah, they had them at my school. They're alright, but not magical. They're really durable, but they are susceptable to RF interference like all wireless systems. I've only had to use them for a few occasions when the shots were too wide to get a boom in. One of the occasions, was on a windy rooftop next to the CBS tower. Yeah, didn't get the greatest sound for that set up. I was happy once they got closer in so I could go back to the boom.

I think the only difference between these and the 400 series is the automatic ability to find a clear freq. .. ..I wonder if they work better OUT of the larger cities. . .

wrong wrong wrong. there is a major difference as you will see pretty clearly if you compare even just the prices.

the 200 and 400 series systems are almost ENTIRELY different in everyway.

if you go to lectro.com you can download the manuals and you'll see what I mean.

Back to the 100's, they are decidedly "alright". They work nicely, and if you're used to G2 or Sony rubbish you'll hear a big difference when you use them for a while (until your ears settle on what they sound like). They do have a lot of pitfalls though - price (way too much compared to G2 series), powering (9v batteries, not good on the pocket), non-diversity (ok in low traffic spectrums, but this affects range and RF hits), frequency agile, but not easily! (The lectro screw system is fine on Tx's, but isnt fun on the Rx's.)

In short - they're fine, I use them, but I'll be upgrading as soon as I can, later this year. :) I've had them for a year now.

I had the Lectro 100 set with the LM transmitter. Don't bother unless you're going with the 100mw transmitters. The LM is 50mw... it's also digital capable, but the 100 series receivers are NOT... the LM is designed to allow an upgrade path to digital, but paired with the 100 series all you really get is a transmitter that's in the ballpark of a G2 as far as "balls" are concerned.

Part of the whole value in a Lectro set is the balls-factor... some transmitters are 100mw some are even as high as 250mw! Sure there's more to it then transmitter power... but I compared the 100 series head to head with the Sennheiser G2 (G2 transmitters output 30-35mw)... and while the Lectro performs better, I consider it to be a fairly small margin of victory. If the Lectro 100 were about $100 higher (with LM) then the G2... or $200 (with the regular 100mw) then they'd have a winner. As it stands now... the G2 is simply too convenient and effective at the price-point.

If you can find a used set in a clear frequency block then you'd be better off getting a Lectro 195D then either of the other two, but if the choice is between the Lectro 100 and G2 then you may as well save some money and go G2.

Great info= Thanks !

I talked to a guy at Location Sound and he said for my purpose (ENG, run and gun stuff), narrow band wireless was not necessary (Lectro 200 and 400 series), simply overkill. Im not doing high end work.

He suggested the Lecto100 series OR Sennheiser G2 series, both with a decent (Sanken) mike. He did say the 100 series was 50mw out vs. G2 which was 30mw out.

all the 400 series and the lm transmitter could work with 100 receiver
so you can take the lm which depends on the band is between 50 and 70 mw ( lectrosnics as grate company sais it over 50 ) or um ,mm or sm transmitters which are 100mw , or um 450 which is 250 mw
since you are going work on eng stuff , and depend totally on reception of your reciever i will strongly recommend you work or with grater then 30mw sennheiser **** or non dyvercity 100.
buy used 200 diversity series reciever , or used divercity sennheiser 3041 reciever which can work with lm transmitter to eliminate hits or crap your work .
by the way ,he definitely would like sell you the 100 as it probably sits ages on his shelf:-)
used 210 or 201 are way better solution for run gun then non diversity

Thanks Oleg! Sound Location also suggested the Sanken cos-11, whats your take on that mike ? It cost around USD $314 at SL.

The price difference between the G2 and the Lectro 100 is less bothersome then the price difference between the Lectro 100 at $1000 and a used 201 system which although usually sells for around $1500 I have seen many go for $1100 to 1200. Unless it's someone who plans to upgrade the reciever to a 400 in the near future I see no reason to get the 100 Lectro system at it's current price (even that seems like a bad invest choice to me).

My $.02 anyways

Any Lectro 2XX series used would be nice. No argument there. I stand by what I already said... the Sennheiser G2 is a bargain at the price. It depends on what you do and how much you're getting paid. The Lectro 100 is "a little better" then the Sennheiser... I tested these systems head to head for a week. This was when I owned the Lectro with LM transmitter and my buddy Joe owned the G2... the Lectro pretty much won every "challenge" but not by a long margin. I could get a little farther away... or for a given duration in a challenging environment I would get a few less hits... but even at that the biggest difference in the Lectro and the Sennheiser was that the Lectro would get an audible hit and the Sennheiser would totally drop out. I call that a toss-up... if the G2 is sh*t for outputting only 30mw then the Lectro 100 with LM transmitter is a wet flatulation at best.

Like I said... even a 195D (diversity... D...) would be better then either the the 100 or the G2. The G2 is the lowest wireless set that I'd recommend to anybody... nothing less then that... and ask yourself what kind of work you do... if you do pro work then go with something else. If you DON'T do a lot of pro work the the G2 is a bargain. I have two G2 sets in my own kit and 2 x 195D + 2 x 211 in my pro bag. I've had some odd days where I get occasional hits on even the 195D... it's not like even that is guaranteed audio... but the Lectro 2XX series has always been as good as wired for me.

I just sold my G2 stuff. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MESO:IT&viewitem=&item=290070390559&rd=1&rd=1

Matt pretty much nailed it, but I have to add, the G2 *to my ears* was noticably noisier and "pumpy".

The Lectro 200 series is now discontinued by Lectrosonics (along w/ 90% of ALL their gear :badputer: these days).

The 200 and 195 are best companding systems out there. The 400/411 - different ball game altogether. Now THOSE I would consider as good as wire.

There are three mics I find to be absolutely fantastic lavs:

1. The Tram :love4:
2. The Sanken cos-11 :love4:
3. The CountryMan B3 :love4:

In that order.

While I think the G2 is a good price/value deal on wireless, it does come up short on the companding circuit (as Silicon was talking about). I am often left wondering why Senn has not worked to develop a better circuit in the 6 plus years since they introduced this series. I guess they can keep the wireless so cheap because they aren't investing much in R&D like Lectro and Zaxcom are doing.

I'm not trying to disparage the G2, it really is a good solution for some circumstances, but I just feel they could do a little better with the G3 :)

Cheers

The G2 is only about 3 years old... the G1 was a much less evolved unit... larger and harder to set up.

I'm agreeing that the Lectro 100 is a better overall system, but a Lectro 100 with LM transmitter is $1,000-1,100.

You can get a G2 set with all cables and the plug-on for $525 shipped... so litterally half the price AND a plug-on thrown in as well. The Lectro 100 to Sennheiser G2 isn't an apples to apples comparison... the 100 system should be a lot better then the G2... I'd think at least twice as good anyway. Wouldn't you say the 200 series Lectros are twice as good as the 100 series? I would... but for double the cost of the G2 you don't get that much improvement. My .02

Actually Wabbit, Sennheiser does have better units in the 3000 and 5000 series (and prices to match). Don't hear a lot about these models here, but I have seen them used on a few shows where you accidentally see the mic pack. I don't know a lot about their specs though (and not really all that interested...) ;-)
