Lectro Wireless vs. Boomed Oktava

They Live

Okay, I already know the answers to this.

WIRED is always better than WIRELESS.

Lavalier is low on the totem pole for mic choices.

I know that the boomed oktava would work better than a Wireless Lectro Lav. Then why am I posting this? Here's my problem.

We have not been able to find an experienced boom operator for this documentary I'm about to start shooting. Monday morning, we're following around the subject of the documentary as he scouts a church location where he is performing a piece of music on New Year's Eve.

The owner of a local production house who is friends with one of my producers has generously offered us the use of a wireless lectro lav, to be placed on our subject, therefore freeing us from the need for a boom operator.

My worries: Sound design and wireless in general. I'm not experienced with wireless mic technology. I've read a lot about the problems that can arise. I also want to make sure that we are picking up the other guys on the location scout as they talk. I think we're going to lose a lot of the room ambience and also get a weird sounding discussion because the lav will be placed on one person. I'm also concerned about rustling clothes, yadda yadda yadda.

The sound doesn't have to be perfect. But would I be better off just finding someone, anyone, to operate the boom?

Thanks
Ben

it would be better you will take the wireless and find boom operator or at least some one that can point the boom to the right direction:-)

But if I do that, I'll miss my ability to record to 2 channels with one mic, riding one hot and the other cooler.

Guess I have to pick which safety option. Two mic choices, or two channel choices.

Would it be completely pointless to mount the Oktava on the DVX with the shockmount it came with?

Okay, I've got the Oktava as my back up, shockmounted on the DVX with the Ktek shockmount. This is going to be interesting. Wish there were more sound guys around C'ville, Va.
