Leaving Premiere Pro!!

Never thought I would say this but I plan on leaving P.P. for the FREE Davinci Resolve 12.5.
Once known for its superior color grading, Blackmagic has developed a well designed NLE that
is going to give Adobe a run for their money. AND ITS FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+1

Almost free, for some nice functions you will need the dongle.

I used premiere also. I like Resolve and get used to it.

It would be great to hear your thoughts in a few weeks or months after the move!

Personally I love Premiere/AE, but hate the ransom style subscription model and the always-broken updates. I'm not thinking of switching any time soon but I can see why plenty of people might, and they would love to hear some first-hand-reports from someone who's walked that road.

It would be great to hear what you find different, what feels the same, and if there's anything you really miss.

So far I haven't found any freeware or low cost NLE which can replace PP for multicam editing plus making subclips of intermediate edits.

If there is one, I'd love to try it.

The subscription model doesn't bother me, in fact, Avid's subscription offering is part of what encouraged me to switch. The only thing I really miss is the ability to edit anything without transcoding. Avid offers AMA linking, which works fine for smaller projects, but for a long form feature, you really need to transcode first to MXF. So I've lost that, but what I gained is better support and stability, plus it's no secret that Avid's trimming functions are the best that's out there (Google this if you doubt it). I don't miss all the crashes, the long project load times, or even the long application load time. I have a solid workflow in place now that allows me complete creative freedom using Media Composer, Pro Tools, Nuke, Mixcraft and Resolve. I also know that I'm now cutting with the same software that all my favorite movies have been cut with, which is comforting and encouraging. At the end of the day, with all it's issues, cutting on Premiere feels like I'm making a YouTube video. Cutting in Media Composer feels like I'm making a movie.

Hopefully with CC 2017 they've fixed the memory handling problems in PP and AE. They've been making me reconsider my subscription lately.

Recently Premiere CC is driving me crazy with audio disappearing from some clips from P2 cards and not only! it doesn't show on clips! i see only video and no audio at all...I googled this problem to discover that many people having this kind of problems! I've edited a peace last day from Odyssey recording 4k prores and the clips with audio missing in different points on the clip! I've checked the clips with other software and the audio was there, perfect,no issues at all! but Premiere continues to show missing audio in ALL clips, interval random missing audio!!!
And one thing that made me angry and makes me really want to say Addio to Premiere is this: I saw a replay from an expert from adobe on adobe forum advising a member to use Handbrake to convert P2 files to bypass Premiere random problem with audio missing from clips! I don't know if you get the point here! he's (Adobe expert!) telling him to use a free software in order to solve Premiere paid software issues....well that one made me angry like Hulk...
So no wonder people gets tired at the end and give up on Premiere..I really hope they solve this on CC17 (latest update) otherwise,well..addio Premiere.

I left Premiere a few years ago and never looked back.

Twenty years ago (or so) I started editing on Avid. (There wasn't much choice at the time, unless you wanted to cut actual film.) Later I moved to FCP because I got tired of being extorted by Avid for their hardware solutions. When FCP became FCPX, I swtiched to Premiere for the bulk of my editing, but kept FCPX on my machine so I could try to wrap my head around it. Over time, as they've updated X and added features that should have been there all along, I've come to not only love FCPX, but I can cut quicker on it than any other NLE I've used. It "gets out of the way" more than Premiere ever could, and crashes way, way less.

With Premiere, I always felt like Adobe was adding features without perfecting (or stabilizing) the features they added in a previous version. The integration with the other CC apps is great, when it works like it should. But for me Premiere became a big, bloated mess that became what felt like a barrier to creativity rather than a tool to unleash it.

That said, they're all capable pieces of software, and as with cameras, chances are your choice of NLE isn't going to be the limiting factor on your creativity. If one serves a user's needs better than the others, switch. I've told many young editors that they're all useful tools, and the more you know about them all, the better off you'll be.

I finally ended up learning FCPX for a network series I'm editing and I've never work as fast. Once you get your head around it (and it takes some time) it blazes any of the others.....

I tried to cut a piece together on Resolve recently. It may have just because I wasn't used to it, but there were many times I felt be faster at doing x or y or z.

I have adobe CC, and have used premiere to integrate with others using it. I will only use it when forced to. AE is another story altogether, motion isn't even in the same class. It does bother me somewhat that Apple try to get you to purchase motion by having the ability to create filter presets there. I've refused. FCPX is, as others have mentioned just the fastest NLE for me. I can rip through edits. YMMV. I like the xml workflow to resolve. Has never failed me, so I'll continue that way. The 10.3 update has only enhanced the speed thing for me.

Just some ramblings about my own experience and not intended to say one is better than the other etc etc.

Would love to hear any reviews on the updates/performance if anyone can chime in. Right now my primary system is a 2009 Mac Pro, so I'm kind of stuck on CC 2015 first version with Yosmite. But it does work!

Such a quandary for me. I can't deny all the positive reviews of X. I am tethered to CC right now primarily for After Effects...I don't honestly think I could walk away from that program.

Yeah

I'm on a 2008 mac pro running El Capitan and PP 2015.3. Why can't you update to CC 2017?

Oh hi, thanks for the response. No....I can I suppose. I just didn't want to push the updates based on the age of the computer & compatibility.

Right now I have both the original PP2015 and the the updated version 15.3. I find my system just isn't up to snuff or maybe it's just not as compatible with the OS when cutting in 15.3. Some projects I'm working on were prone to crashing/lagging ect. PP2015 seems to move more seamlessly. (I made the moronic mistake of upgrading mid-project in one instance)

To really answer your original question, I have held off on upgrades based on this thread

Not sure if they've hammered things out, that thread seemed like just yesterday in my mind...I guess the lesson I'm learning right now is the older you get, the faster time flies!!! (AND/OR Apple is banging out new operating systems at a ridiculous pace)

As always, if you're using PP on a Mac, I'd love to hear your current setup & Operating System of choice. And my other question still stands: anyone delved into '17 yet?

Scott F, unless something has changed, I believe Adobe will only let you stay on a version of CC for so many versions back (or a certain time back) and then they will make you upgrade to a newer version.
So eventually you'll have to move up. Is 2 the limit? I forget....

Another reason I don't like the cloud.
