I want to get my hands on a DVX but can't afford one right now. I'm looking for stores that have rent to own offers with a monthly payment type thing. Anyone know of any? To make things a bit harder, I'm in Canada, not the US. I'll still take a look at US sites though.
Don't do it! I love my DVX, and think that it is worth every penny I spent on it. BUt it has been my expierence that leasing equipment is not the smartest move financially. In the end you'll end up paying 2 to 3 times what you would have paid if you would have paid up front. Just my thoughts. If you really need one, say for a project, then try a rental house. They are reasonable to rent for the day.
Rent to own stores are a ripoff. They prey on the weak. OTOH, your bank might be willing to write a lease for you if you have good credit. Or maybe even a dealer like B&H. But a smarter move would be to buy used or just wait. As far as renting, you need to look at the numbers. Rush at EVS does rentals, and he might be willing to give you partial credit on a long term rental against buying one.
Leasing is ok if you can write off the equipment and claim it and the interest as a business expense. Also, leasing or financing is good if you don't have the means to pay now, but have the means to earn money from the camera. Life is full of risks. The right risks can pay off. Waiting is not ALWAYS the smartest route. Only you can make that decision.
Have you sought out any local video or film co-ops? They are usually a good source of free access to gear, help and like minded enthusiasts. National Film Board offices can also be a source of access to gear. I'm not sure what exists in London, but years ago when I was a starving student and living in Winnipeg, I joined a local film group and got access to all kinds of lights, Arri cameras, animation stands, etc. The local NFB office let me use their Steenbeck flatbeds for editing and sound reads. In fact Academy Award winning animator Richard Condie was in the edit room next door working on "The Big Snit".
Even the local CBC station was intrigued by a project I was doing and loaned me lights, nagra audio gear, camera tripod and dolly and other odds and ends like clap boards and film changing bags for a few months.
Maybe it won't come to anything, but it never hurts to ask!
