I need some UNIX skills for a job I am going to be applying for. I picked up UNIX in a Nutshell, as well as a few other books. My main problem is that I don't have a UNIX box to work with. Are there any programs out there that run a fake UNIX shell so that I could practice my commands?

Re: Learning UNIX

Well, you can try Linux (http://www.redhat.com or http://www.mandrakesoft.com/ or http://www.suse.de/de/index.html) or BSD Unix (http://www.bsd.org/).
They all work in a similar way.
Once you know how to use one, you will know how to use the others. I remember when I first started using Sun Microsystem's Solaris. It was pretty similar to Linux and BSD Unix I was running on my own computer.

Just install both and try them for yourself. I have both installed, but I work mostly with Linux. Maybe because it was one of the first unix flavours I tried. I don't know.

All the best

Re: Learning UNIX

if you just want to get your feet wet, go to http://www.knoppix.org, click on the English/British flag, and scroll down to get details about this Linux distribution.

Basically, you can build a bootable CD from their ISO file and boot directly from the CD. It will bring up a complete Linux operating system; you don't need to install anything on your computer!

This is really the best way to start learning about UNIX. You can fire up browsers, mount filesystems, open up a terminal session to practice your unix command line stuff, etc.

Oh yes. I forgot about that one. The good thing is that you don't need to install anything. Just boot from the CD.

Re: Learning UNIX

I went the Knoppix route. This thing is awesome! Thanks for the help guys! Know all I have to do is learn my command line commands. Fun! :P

Re: Learning UNIX

What would make it not work on some computers?

Worked on mine!

It may not support the hardware you have on your computer. It will work with any modern computer, but it may not have the drivers for some old ones.
