Learning the SQN 4 Mixer?

Hi guys,

Im just wondering if you know of any good resources with decent tutorials/walk-throughs of the SQN 4 mixer??

I have used it briefly in the past but i am still unsure of a number of the controls etc
Unfortunately i don't know any sound recordists who could give me a quick lesson :(

I have looked through user guides etc but it doesn't really give me the 'hands-on', laymens terms info for the mixer which would be useful as i am quite new to sound :-)

Any help would be great! Thanks in advance

Tom.

Thanks man,
its just that i work primarily around camera... but i am keen to work with sound but i don't know a lot of the terminology with sound which leads to issues with using mixers and understanding what does what. Basically i feel i cant get the best out of it!
From past experiences with the SQN i have had issues which have lead to alot of time being wasted so i really just want to become familiar with the structure of it... and hopefully more hands on experience after that will improve my technique and knowledge!

:P

Thanks

Tom.

Hey,

Some quick notes

- power is by batteries which you put at the side, or with NP1 batteries.
The connection is at the left and right side (it's the same)
- turning on is at the left side
- at the left side you have the input for the mices
- at the right side you can control pan (left or righ) there are 4 switches
and 4 turn know. Moving a switch left or right will send the audio of that channel
to the left or right side. This is used when ig using wireless and boom (to record them seperated on camera ig)

- at the back you can turn the screw (with screwdriver or else possible).
for microphones it has to be on "mice", and for 48v needed mices, it has to be
on 48V

- line is used for wireless mostly.

- you can also attenuate when a source is to loud and the levelknob is completely turned down. (to the left side)

- on top the "gang" knob has to be on 0 for normal use.

- when using return sound of a camera, the mix/aux switch has to be on aux
put the camera monitor level on a good level for maybe the cameraman, and
adjust the level on the SQN at the back (left side aux adjust).
it's important to have the same level for "mix" and "aux" switched. This can be easy done with 1kHZ tone. Is the swith on top somewhere in the middle left side.

Hopefully this could be a start ?

Thankyou very much dre83!

I really appreciate your input!
Its really because we always rent an SQN and of course alot of different people fiddle with it... so for an inexperienced operator like me if something has been adjusted for a certain situation, it may only be when we are doing a sound test before an interview that we will realize something is not right... as visually, i'm not sure what is right or wrong for the situation sometimes. haha and this will lead to delays figuring it out.
(BTW we would have a proper sound recordist if we had the budget but for now i have to take charge as i do know a little bit! haha)

Many thanks guys!

Tom.

P.s also the broken return sound from the camera set us back last time a lot so that may have dropped my confidence with the mixer somewhat! My own fault for forgetting after i was told... had a lot to do i guess :( haha

Well the SQN is still easier then a sounddevice.

Sounddevice has a "secret" menu where you can adjust or destroy settings.

Return is very important...more important then paying your taxes and bills :-Dum(DBG):

Hi Tom, please feel free to call either myself or my colleague Bob Hunt (service manager) as we would be more than happy to chat through any uncertainties you have about your mixer, type up crib sheets etc.
