Learning sound and optics

Right now, I know next to nothing about the science of sound or optics, which makes it extremely difficult to edit sound in Adobe Audition, take pictures in manual focus on the Canon Rebel, or focus the dvx without the help of my macbook production monitor.

I'm looking for some resources, print or internet, that will help me understand the science behind the two fields. Knowing how to measure in dB and learning how to gauge where a sound falls, for example, would help immensely.

hmm. fredmiranda.com has a photoshop plugin called noise ninja that helps reduce noise. as far as for video, i wouldnt go in to the dB's nd if you need to, 6 at the most
