LCD Projectors = Awesomeness!

A few days ago we were given a GREAT deal on an LCD projector for an "Interactive Classroom" Isara is working on. The projector makes classes much more interesting and helps the students learn more efficiently. BUT, aside from all that mumbo jumo, watching movies on it is TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

Watching Braveheart on a 72" image was like watching it for the very first time. ....Granted, the crayon drawings and pink clock on the wall were really distracting, but my girlfriend does the decorating so I guess they gotta stay.

So who else has an LCD projector (i.e., awesome magic-image machine) and what pros/cons have you experienced? Also, do you have any suggestions for a noob?

I have a HD DLP projector myself.
I've owned DLP/CRT/LCD projectors in the past. The only things you have to watch out for with LCD projectors are dead pixels and/or panel shifting. Both technologies (DLP/LCD) have improved dramatically over the past 7 years or so. If the optics are not sealed try to keep it clean. Otherwise the panels will get dust on them and you will start to see blotches on your image. Also, screens can be built on the cheap. There are plenty of fabrics out there that will do the job quite nicely.

Nothing like a big screen! Enjoy it.

Cheers,

Mike

We've been shopping 720P projectors for a few months. Prices are coming down. It's the first thing on our shopping list once my wife finds a new job.

Gotta have priorities.

Congrats PK. As much as I am glad it helps the kids, I am equally glad you get to watch movies on it

Thanks, Michael. We might have a movie night outside each Friday and will definitely look into making a screen for that. The whiteboard in the classroom is a little too reflective.

Good luck getting the projector, Jim. You won't be disappointed.

P.S. I made a mistake. The projector we got is actually a DLP projector. I had no idea there was a difference until now. D'oh!!

Cool. Here is a DIY screen link. Check out the stickies first. HERE

Have fun!

I feel like I am always waiting for the price of something to come down :(
Yup, you could always sit on the fence and wait. There will always be something better just around the corner.

I've been enjoying HD projectors for years now, just jump in and have fun. At certain seating distances most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a good 720p HD image and a 1080p one.

Only up close on very large screens does it really become a factor.

Enjoy!

Mike

Yeah, I have an HD DLP Cinema Projector from Optima, and it is compatible up to 1080p through HDMI. Watching movies on it through a 5.1 surround is glorious. The only downside is that the bulbs are generally rated for about 1500 hours of use, which goes quick if you have an XBOX 360 hooked up, and are constantly watching films. $300 to replace, so that's the ONLY downside in my opinion, but it is a necessary evil.
