LCD Picture Area

Hello DVX Users

I was trying to determine how accurate the LCD on the DXV100A is in terms of showing the actual picture area that gets recorded. From a rough test that I did, it seems like the view that gets recorded is about 15% wider on each side, and 10% more on the top than what the LCD shows. I’ve got some very critical compositions that I want to do and I’m trying to frame everything perfectly in the shot so I don’t have to crop and lose any resolution. Has anyone dealt with this issue and have some insight they can share?

thanks

Re: LCD Picture Area

Hmm, your estimate seems a bit off from my experience. 15% wider on *each* side? My own estimate is something like between 5-10% total vertical and horizontal--but I haven't measured. I think the general recommendation for you is to rent or buy a monitor with underscan if you need to critically frame your shots.

Re: LCD Picture Area

In my experience, the groove around the LCD panel shows basically what you would be seeing if the LCD panel were showing the full frame (follow that?) Imagine that inside that grooved line, that there was actual LCD material, and that's about what the full frame is. So the grooved area represents picture that's being recorded but not shown by the LCD.

Re: LCD Picture Area

I'd highly recommend a field montior for critical framing accuracy. I use a 4:3 field monitor AND a 16:9 LCD when shooting with the anmorphic lens. This way I can correct coloring in the 4:3 and see the full fram in the LCD. I realize that there field monitors that do both, but I already owned both displays. You could also use a laptop to see 16:9 framing also.

I wouldn't recommend using the on-board LCD for scenes like this. You'll be disapointed if you do.

Re: LCD Picture Area

Panasonic would have done us a huge favor if they'd have included an underscan mode on the LCD. They could probably add it with a firmware mod--how hard could it be? Do you think they'll release a DVX100b? ;D

Re: LCD Picture Area

I asked Steve Golub to do exactly that, when he was product manager. I also asked for electronic de-anamorphosizing in the viewfinder, and a few other things -- oh yeah, I wanted a super-zoom mode in the LCD so you could actually use it for critical focus, because the image would be a highly magnified version of the central 1/4 of the LCD (or whatever ratio makes sense, given the pixel count of the LCD).

He listened, and said "we're addressing that another way." Little did I know that a month later the DVX100A would hit the streets with the EVF DTL feature.

If I'd spoken up six months earlier, all those things might have made it in -- who knows?

Re: LCD Picture Area

You know, I think you're probably right. I remember the early comments and criticisms of the DVX100 and Panasonic seems to have addressed them all in the DVX100a. I don't actually think there will be a DVX100b, but maybe I'll be surprised.

Re: LCD Picture Area

Speaking of LCD screens, this topic has come up more than once but someone accidently touched my LCD screen and I don't know what to use to clean the smudge off without damaging the screen!

Re: LCD Picture Area

The underscan mode for LCD would have been nice. I'll have to look into getting a monitor one of these days, but for now. I'll just have to approximate as best as I can.
