Re: LCD monitor

You need DVRack.

This will let you know precisely where your levels are as well as a host of other things.

Re: LCD monitor DVRACK?????

Re: LCD monitor DVRACK?????

do you work for them? cause they sure are not at the office.

I download demo. Doesn't look like real 16:9 display from xl2??? Not same framing as camera. how is that letterbox thingy suppoed to accuratly reference 16:9

SM User forum doesn't let me post after register, no response on emails??? Wow, what a let down.

Re: LCD monitor

Sorry, I'm just going off previous posts from others. I thought it had 16:9.

Did you download the manual? It should say in there.

The web page states 16x9 widescreen aspect ratio.

Re: LCD monitor

You have to change the aspect ratio in the monitor's menu to get 16:9 (which is like 1.776:1). If you don't change the aspect ratio, it'll show it as 4:3 by default.

Don't use the letterbox mode, change the aspect ratio.

Don't know why you're not getting e-mail response, I always got reasonably quick support responses to e-mail questions. I haven't e-mailed them in the last month or so though...

Re: LCD monitor

very sorry folks , spoke too soon, yes Barry is right

i'll be over in the corner with the dunce cap on.....

no way to see camera menus on dv rack?

Re: LCD monitor

They were on Thanks Giving break.

I thought your issues were video levels and that is what it does best ( via the waveform monitor) but.... yes it will show a customiseable letterbox in the field monitor.  The aspect ratio  appears to be consistent with what ever the camera is set at and I do not think it has anything to do with pixel ratios.

An accurate waveform monitor and the ability to read it is the only way to shoot DV (video) with a degree of control. Trusting field monitors is a recipe for disaster...

Re: LCD monitor

I tried the DVRack demo with an XL2 myself, and the 16x9 thing irked me more then anything else. From years of using the Sony monitors the software is attempting to emulate, I figured they would have kept the functionality of the monitor faithful. As it looked so close to equipment I've used in the past, I didn't bother to read the manual and just pressed the "letterbox" button.

On a sony monitor, this button is a 16x9 button, not a widescreen mask. It was only after a few shots that I realized the DVRack wasn't even close to what I was seeing in the XL2. Luckily, I was viewing my shots in the camera, not on the laptop...if I had relied on the DVRack, I would have been screwed. After poking around in the menus, I eventually found the aspect ratio function and continued with the shoot.

It just really annoyed me that they went to the trouble of recreating a production monitor, then they changed the function of one of the buttons. If this is really a piece of "professional" software aimed at "professional" techs, then shouldn't the emulation follow the equipment it's designed to look like?

Re: LCD monitor

After using it today and going between 4:3 and 16:9, I'd say it's absolutely mandatory for them to change the aspect ratio button. Get rid of the "letterbox" button on the monitor and change it to "aspect ratio", because the letterbox thing is basically pointless (well, it'd save you trying to tape your LCD monitor off, but other than that...) whereas the 16:9/4:3 switchable thing is mandatory.

And yes, in reference to the pixel aspect ratio question above, DV Rack does change the aspect ratio of the pixels when using the aspect ratio option.

Re: LCD monitor

Do you mean the actual recorded footage will have changed aspect ratio? IOW, will it become widescreen if I shoot with anamorphic adapter and record with DVRack with aspect ratio set to 1.76?

Re: LCD monitor

DV Rack does nothing to the aspect ratio. It has an option to change the aspect ratio of the display monitor, but it will not touch the footage in any way. There's nothing you can do in DV Rack that will modify the recorded footage at all -- it always records directly whatever the firewire is putting out. You just have the choice of how you want to view it, and DV Rack provides aspect ratios from 1.333 up to 2.40 or so (don't remember exactly).

Switching to 4:3 & 16:9 in DV Rack

Switching to 4:3 & 16:9 in DV Rack

By (insistent) popular demand, the new upgrade for DV Rack provides keyboard shortcuts for switching to 4:3 and 16:9 views. They are F8 and CTRL+F8, respectively.

So what's next on your wish list, folks?
