Lavs for an indie project

A few months back I found a topic about Lavs where it was mentioned there were sennheiser brand lavs that were considered to be very good for a very reasonable price (between $500-600). I have since searched for that article, but unable to find it. Would someone provide a bit of advice for someone searching for a Lav kit in the cost range of $500-600. I am hoping to get a kit with the receiver and 2 lav mics. I am also looking for any articles/materials that would better educate me on the use of lavs.

Thank you,

Your terminology is kinda messed up. A lav is a lavalier microphone, whereas you are referring to wireless kits.

Most people, myself included, have turned to the Sennheiser G2 wireless for our needs. It is $499 and the cheapest acceptable wireless solution. You can replace the lav microphones with the Countryman B6, which is the smallest lav mic I've ever seen.

The Sennheiser comes with a lavalier microphone, I still use it, although there are better ones available. Best of luck.

Thank you for your help.
I was referring to wireless lavaliere microphone kits. I was hoping there was a kit that included 2 mics, a receiver, and whatever else was mandatory to use lavs. I wasn't sure if you had to purchase each mic and receiver individually. I'm not looking for a wired lavaliere mic kit. Please forgive me for not being detailed with my post.

Thank you again, as always you are VERY helpful.

Kugar,

Sennheiser (through their resellers) sells several kits. You have to decide which one is best for you (if you check a site like B&H you will get all of the part numbers, I'm not going to try to be that detailed here):

1. Battery operated Tx and Rx with a lavaliere or a head-worn mic, or a guitar kit(comes with a MK2 or MK4, both fairly crappy and very subject to clothing rub, and not to be confused with a more well thought of MKE2 - aka micky 2)
2. Battery operated Tx and powered Rx (same configurations as above)
3. ENG kit-Battery operated Tx and Rx and Plug-on Tx (the limitation of this kit is that the plug on does not have phantom power)

You can also buy the individual components, but you will pay more. You can also start to grow your solution, as I am, and have both the powered and battery operated Rx's (the powered version does true diversity). I'm also adding shark-fin antennae and antennae splitter to help boost performance.

As far as the lavalieres go, here is a list of the well thought of ones:

1. Countryman B6, B3 and/or EMW (I have all three and love all of them, but the B6 is my absolute favorite....good sound and tiny, so it hides easily.)
2. Sanken COS11
3. Sennheiser MKE2
4. Tram-50
5. Pin-Mic

If you get a G2 and want an extra mic I have two that are on ebay at the moment. They are brand new still in the bag Sennheiser lavs that came with the G2's so they are already wired for it.
It's a shamless plug butthere you go. WE got the G2's and bought Tram's to go with them so these are for sale.

I don't know Scott...when I got my G2 kits, the bags those mics were in were marked "Throw away". ;-) (I guess I'm trying to sound like Oleg now... ;-)

Thank you... I lead a 9 minute seder last night. I think that is a new record for me.

Phil,

I'm selling them still in the bag... I have heard some folks like then and for the price they will probably go for that would be an inexpensive backup. I made no claims of greatness even on ebay. It just seemed a waste to toss them and we wont be using them. I only mentioned it since the poster seemed to be looking for them.

I know Scott, and besides, like Oleg said, if someone is willing to buy them, why not take the money from them and run. ;-)

Any word on AY going back into the studio? If possible, I would love to join you guys and watch...

Take care,

Phil

As far as I know things are moving forward. I have been so busy latly that I haven't been checking in with Brian much. But we will probably go back in to the Film Center, strange as that sounds. It looks like one of the stages is still working under new management, so we could go back to the stage we mixed on with the same mixer. I'm guessing later this year.

Hey you want a deal on a lav...

also, gotham sound has a thingie where they can modify lav's like the cos-11 (my favorite) and the countrymen b6 to work with the sennheiser transmitter.

i personally just use the skp-500 transmitter when i want to use one of my really good lav's vs. the acceptable ones that came with the ew-500 or ew-100 g2 transmitters.

depends if your doing dramatic work or docu work.

for docu work the mic that comes with the sennheiser g2 setup is fine imho.

what do you make of the G2? I stumbled across them, while searching for a wireless set up. Strong signal? Good sound? If so, I think I'll take 'em. Does anyone know of an audio test on the web for the G2 system. I'd love to hear before I fork out the $600.

Kanoab,

I did an a/b demo of the B6 and the EMW running through G2's. If I remember correctly, I also did it with the stock ME2. You can find the thread here with the link.

Thanks to everyone who posted to this thread. I hadn't checked this post in a few days b/c I didn't receive an email notifying me there were additional posts on this thread, so I had no clue. I just happen to be surfing the site and noticed there were updates. Please forgive my absence.

Once again, thank you everyone for your helpfulness!
