Lavalier microphones that cut with the Sennheiser ME-66...

ksduded

Sorry, but I have not done a test yet. I have been sick as a dog for the past 10 days, and unable to get out a test like that. I will say that the mic sounds good. I will be comparing the Lav and the Pin to eachother. They do have the same capsule, but when the lav is attached to your shirt in the normal place - center of chest, the capsule is pointing up. The pinMic would be pointing outward from wherever it's pinned. The mics are omni patterns, which should pick up from any direction. Even Guy at DvEstore points his lav straight down, however I think even an omni sounds better when it's pointing towards the mouth. If it didn't matter that the mic showed, I would probably choose the lav over the Pin for the fact that the lav points toward the mouth. Still the pin sounds good. I have a couple very short examples in an ad I did last week. I was updating an ad from last year where I had all these merchants in a shopping center say a little 5 second thing about their store. Last year I did it all with the Sennheiser ME-2 (all I had at that time) going through a G3 unit. This year I updated 2 of the merchants and indeed used the PinMic to test it out. On the linked video the 2 PinMic merchants were #1 & #4 "Arcata Main St." and "Living Quarters Design Studio". This isn't the greatest test as there is background music, and the "Living Quarters" merchant had a loud hum caused by a heater near her store that I removed using IzoTope RxII. But given all that info here is the PinMic mixed in with the ME-2, which I thought sounded terrible.in Merchant #1 the PimMic was on her collar close to her mouth. On Merchant #4 it was on her sweater under the scarf she was wearing.

OK I just went and found some shots I did with the Rode PinMic. No music or post processing. Just pure Pin. At the very beginning there is a quick take of one lady using the AT4053b to give you a reference point to compare to. I think the PinMic sounds pretty good here. Proximity seems to be pretty important judging from these tests. The Lady in the black jacket had the mic on the collar of her jacket, and it was closer to where the other two ladies had their mics. So the best place is on the collar, but then there is the issue of if they turn their heads toward the opposite collar. Anyway, I think the mic sounds pretty dang decent.

hey thanks for the tests... appreciate it a lot. Can you give some details on the room noise. I did hear some constant buzz in the background. And was it the only mic? it really picked up your voice very clearly as well......

I watched your four mic shootout, and I really like the Rode Lavalier. The pinmic does not seem to be able to match it. Or was it due to the location, you did the other one in the studio, so would you say that played a part.

I really love the way the pinmic is so transparent. I will be shooting a narrative series in a month and wanted to shoot with a dSLR in crowded locations. So I want to be as discreet as possible, and this pinmic certainly is a god send.

In those clips the pin mic on the subject was the only mic used. On the 3rd clip unfortunately some heater started that caused the hum. I removed that sound for the actual ad, but left it in so the test would be true, unaltered sound. And yes there is a difference in the sound between being in my treated studio, and untreated locations. My personal PinMic demo will be made in the studio.

damn, i wanted to order 2 pinmics, but dvestore.com told me that Rode has pushed the released date to mid December.
