Lav microphones playing up all of a sudden...

Well not quite all of a sudden. I had 2 lav mics (can't remember exactly what, not bad ones as I did my research... not sanken, but anyway)... they were both working with my Sennheiser G2 a few months ago, but now neither of them work.

They will pick up a bit of audio, sometimes, but it's noisy and grainy and intermittent...

I was using them with the Sennheiser G2, but just bought a Sony UWP-D11 and they're still not working...

Any ideas as to anything I might be missing? I'm not a master of audio so think I might be missing something obvious.

Thanks

It's the Sennheiser ME-2 that I've got. Could this just be that both lav mics are just broken? That seems odd... they were in a bubble wrap bag for a year maybe, unused...

The odds of a lav going bad is slim. The odds of two lavs going bad at the same time is just about zero unless you stepped on them or stored them in a salt-fog.

- What makes you think it is the lavs? Did you plug them both into the same G2? Maybe it is the G2 and not the lav.
- Open up the connector and look for loose or broken wires. Odds are this is not the problem as both have failed at the same time.
- Put fresh batteries in the G2.

The G2 / G3 mics will often fail and give intermittent signal with a fractured cable just above the moulded 3.5mm plug, you can normally visually see that something might be wrong as the cable will have a couple of very small lumps just above the connector.

Or mic cables often fracture just below the mic if they are twisted and manipulated often around the clamp / clip (a common problem in TV News studios)

Mics that suit Sennheiser Tx units will NOT work on Sony Tx units, and the other way around also..... the wiring is quite different between them.

"just bought a Sony UWP-D11 and they're still not working..."
- The Sennheiser ME2 will not work with the Sony.. the mic connector is wired different. You will have to rewire the ME2's connector.. or better yet, get a good mic specifically wired for the Sony. (FWIW, the ME2 is not highly regarded)

Otherwise, the ME2 mics are probably not broken. Try a different channel on the Sennheiser. The G2 receiver's scan function good place to start finding an open channel.

Ah ok, well that's my amateur audio brain thinking that a lav mic would just work with any radio mic setup.

EDIT: done my research and realise my ignorance
