Lav Mic question

I'm new to sound and would like to thank all the regulars in this forum. New, well, I know VERY little of sound and have been reading all your posts for days. I feel that I've learned so much already. I only wish I'd arrived here sooner.

I've been searching and coming close but not quite....
It seems that a lot of people who buy more "low-end" lav systems find that the mics they come with, well, kinda stink.

What are the better mics???

I recently purchased the Azden 200ult before reading this forum ('til my eyes bleed.......now, feeling like a sucker). Although it's very possibly an inferior product, I have been able to get some clarity. I was thinking of getting better mics (simply the wire w/ the mic on the end) in hopes of improving the sound. If the mics do not improve the sound, at least I'd have them for when I can afford to upgrade to a better transmitter/reciever system.

I will be using the lavs next week on a fishing boat. This will be a "test" shoot for me to see how much audio I'll be able to salvage (via/ Azden). Also to see if I'll need to rent "real" equipment. (used w/DVX-100b)

Question being, "Would better mics make a difference on this Azden system?"

and if so, "What are the better lav mics?"

Thank you in advance

Chris

cant hurt i guess, if you can get them wired right. you're looking at countryman EMW or B6, Sanken COS-11, or possibly a Tram or Sonotrim. Search for those, it will give you all the answers you need, Im sure.

Good luck..

Call Countryman...they can probably get you EMW's wired correctly. Not sure if they can overcome any limitations in the wireless set - I don't know that set (but do have very strong opinions about Azden in general.... :-( )

Thank you Phil, I'll look into countryman.

Yea, I bought the Azdens before I even found this DVXuser site. Also, like a lot of users on this site, am a little strapped for cash and will have to make due (for the time being) w/ the Azdens.
I'm a little bummed on my purchase, but hopefully they can get me through until I can afford a better/more reliable lav set-up.

Thanks again for your help Phil, timapter

Check out the Sennheiser MKE-2 Gold Lav. It is designed to resist moisture which may come in handy on a fishing boat. You will find that 2 of these would cost more than your whole Azden set up though.

Price is why I recommended the EMW's. B3's and B6's are very well designed relative to moisture resistance (I think one year at NAB they were dipping B6's in to a glass of Coke and then showing that they still worked.) This is why the B3 is the standard for live theater - it is also very make up resistant (very important in theater because it is often mounted in the center of the actor's forehead).

Thank you for the info. It seems very obvious that you guys know your stuff.....I do not.

Once again, I am new to video production and have been learning (sometimes, the hard way) of the importance of good audio. I am learning, (which is good), largely in part to all the kind experts here at DVXuser. Thank you all very much.

Also realizing how often lavs are called for (since you can't boom everything) I will save up for a good lav system. What would I be looking at? Could $2000 get me a reliable system? $3k? How long do I have to keep putting money into my Azden swear jar? .......which can fill up fast.

Thanks

Chris
