I am using dat tape drives to output (and save )visual data from sgi workstations and Pc based work stations
I use dd3 tapes .
My question

Are there many new types of storage medium or deliverable recording units for outputting visual data such as video clips and fx files and high render frames for print out put?

I would like to know what is big contempoary thing for delivery of film or video data for editing and fx processing .

With memory sticks and p2 cards gaining popularity i have a feeling dat tapes are
slowly going to get phased out .
Thanks for a reply .
Cheers

I'm not sure what the industry standards are, but for LOTR and Kong, small portable hard drives were used extensively, as was internet delivery. Also in the smaller markets, at least, delivery on hard drive is becoming very common.

I do agree that DAT is on its way out. I'm just not sure what its market permeance still is.

Most people use DLT (8mm), I'm surprised to hear that your still using the 4mm dat tapes.

Although hard drives are cheap and portable I would still archive to some kind of data tape. For smaller amounts of data a lot of people are backing up their data on DVD's and I'm sure that will increase as the capacity of the Blu-rey and HDDVD increases.

Thanks Chuck
