Latest from M. Night

Wow - that's 12 long pages of M. Night observations, so... I'll now add to it.

Okay, the mudroom scene scared the s*** out of me. Why does Mel have to look underneath? I dunno, but I pulled my feet off the floor onto the sofa when I watched for the first time.

The cornfield flashlight scene, just like the E.T. shed scene, also made me uncomfortable. So did the alien on the roof of the barn. Creepy.

My conclusion on M. Night is that what he does almost better than any other director is create well-engineered vignettes - almost always very frightening to watch. But in the end, they're just scary, disjointed little parlor tricks masquerading within what should be the larger story.

Aliens cannot open doors or windows, airplanes have been told not to fly over the wildlife preserve and Bruce is dead too.

Really - my kid, aged four, with an assist from John's boy, could tear that shack completely apart in less than 10 minutes. I don't buy the water explanations - not a bit. Anyone and everyone who saw that for the first time had to feel like: "...uh, you're kidding - right?"

Raise your hand if you hadn't figured out the entire story of The Village before he takes her to the creepy woodshed? Hell, I think she'd figured it out!

The thing is, regardless of what I think of his greater storytelling style, I'll probably continue watching M. Night movies, because I like his creepy style.

I'd liken it to seeing a P.T. Barnum sideshow - you know it's all an empty parlor trick and that the payoff won't meet the hype the barker was laying on you before you went in.

Okay. I had to read the entire post so I could feel comfortable addressing this thread. M. Night is a very good director. I would be proud to have made any of his last four films. He has a great visual style. You can look at one of this movies and know it's an M. Night movie. Regarding the twist at the end of the stories. If there wasn't a twist we'd be bitching that it was predictable. We can't have it both ways. At lieast he tried to give us something to think about. I loved the look and feel of The Village. Sure, it telegraphed the ending but the pleasure was in the journey.

That's what I like about his movies. The journey. My order for his movies?
1. Sixth Sense
2. The Village
3. Unbreakable
4. Signs

I'll see his new one because he hasn't disappointed me yet. I'm a little worried about it being a bedtime story though.:undecided

Such eloquence; can you elaborate on this take?

The trailer does'nt tell us much but I'm sure the official trailer will be so much more. I love M NIGHT. ONe of my favortie working directors and one of the few that has that magical 'This is an M Night Film' vibe in his work. So young still yet with so much style.

Also, Giamatti is a huge talent. Like all M Night films; I can't wait.

I'm with you, 100%

Just for the record I did watch it again, and didn't hate it ... as much.

Seriously though, EditPhish, did you read far enough in the thread where you saw my thoughts after my second viewing? I relented on most of the points you made.
LOL  probably not... I got as far as I could before my need to reply got the better of me

I am looking forward to it. The way they edited the teaser? Come on guys, its M. Night. You think thats going to be it? He knows we're waiting for something great, and Im going in with high expectations. Hes bringing back old style and he isnt doing remakes, and in my book, that counts. It takes a good director to be original these days, and hes doing it.

I think Giamatti and M. Night are a more than interesting combination... Looking forward to it!

Sometimes if I watch a movie after some time, I find that my awareness has evolved and I am able to see the movie more clearly and appreciate it for what it is and not be disappointed for what I thought it would be or should be.

I doubt that Shyamalan is credited for only the overall effect of his films. If you have ever picked up a pen and a piece of paper you will know how difficult it is to write something notable. The man uses the same formula (his style) but his scripts are always creative; they are all original. If they are not then write his next one for us. How many films don't we see that have the same ideas regurgitated over and over? The mere fact that there are so many critics of his as opposed to the mass amount of crap, hocus pocus nonsense, imitation of imitation of movies that are released shows how much effect his films have on us. His films are involved and don't just brush the surface of things. His films have layers and are not simply a one dimensional linear film tha throws us some hint of moral at the end. His movies have never left me empty emotionally while ssome of my favorite action films sometimes are debatable.

Do you guys know what hydroquinone is? It is a skin bleaching agent. In small amounts it is legal. IN large doses, it will burn your skin off.

Wasn't it the wrath of Khan or Insurection where they destroyed themselves in attempts to live longer and couldn't tollerate much? Maybe the aliens couldn't open doors because they didn't have human ideas but alien ones like magic and they tried to wish the door open but it didn't work? And remember, the aliens were not invading the planet they were surveying? Maybe the ****ers were not prepared? Well some things were not meant to be read into too much because the focus was elsewhere dumbfucks hence the ****ing cuts in the movie and the pacing.

WTF does this have to do with M. Night? Sounds more like Michael Jackson.

I think I'm not gonna watch his next film... because I'm cursed!

1. Sixth sense

I went to the cinema with my sister, not knowing what this movie is about.
After 20 minutes my sister turned over to me and whispered "I bet Bruce Willis is dead, too!"
Thank you very much. At the end the audience was like "Ooooh, aaaah!" and I was just looking at my watch.

2. Unbreakable

My favorite of the four so far. Went to the cinema, but about in the middle of the movie I thought "Invincible? Mr. Glass? Comics? Ok, got it."
Again, the ending was far from surprising for me.

3. Signs

The very first thing a heared from this movie was some guys discussing the ending. I asked what movie they are talking about and they told me the complete story in 2 minutes. The alien on the roof, the alien mirroring in the TV, water, everything. I watched it months later on DVD.

4. The village

Some german TV station did a pretty detailed making-of a week before the premiere even with the complete first 10 minutes of the movie and a lot of interviews. I guess this making-of was not intended for marketing purposes before premiere, because at the end, they gave the conclusion of the movie. Very clever. Watched it on DVD.

What in the world is going on in this forum haha.

After reading a giant article by Jim Jannard then popping in here I see Fusionist talking about hydroquinone and poo poo, this feels like the twilight zone.

I am just comparing how a thing can affect you in large doses.

In the other statement I was saying that maybe the aliens were weak and so things affected them more.

I was making a mockery.

In the other statement I was saying that maybe the aliens were weak and so things affected them more. But I guess it is pointless to debate stupid things like this hence I made a mockery at the end.

His visual style is very unique... instantly recognizable.

Yeah a steamy pile of crap is to hard to mistake for something else. :violent5:

You either love him or loathe him... guess where I fall?

Visually some great work, other than that... weak.
