In passing the tv show on occasions there have been sequences where the camera "zooms" through the crowded casino at pace. The shot is in focus and yet doesnt look as if the whole shot is sped up.
Its from tv show "Las Vegas" James Cane etc. It seems to be used as a transition from some different scenes on the casino floor past tables and other patrons.
maybe they have a camera on a cable and fly it across the casino. If you watch NFL football games you can see the cable and camera sometimes in cutaways or wideshots. Not saying they use this technique for that show but its my guess. Either that or some serious stedicam moves!
My roommate works for the company that does those (Stargate Digital), and in fact was himself responsible for all the "wooshes" a couple of seasons back.
They're steadicam shots, stabilized to remove "float" and sped up ridiculously fast. The footage is smoothed out using a combination of Twixtor and liberal application of artificial motion blurring.
