Has anybody ever seen a paper roll backdrop that's wider than 12 feet? I need one that's maybe 15 or 16 ft wide for an upcoming shoot, but so far have found nothing.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Andrew
If it has to be 16ft wide, how tall has it got to be? 16:9 would suggest at least 9ft, 4:3 would be 12ft. Get a long roll of the 12ft and unroll it horizontally.
Is this for compositing or for a neutral background? If the paper is white you could overexpose it (but not the talent) to hide the seam. If it is for compositing you can get away with it in post. Otherwise you might have to position the talent or props to hide it. Have you done tests to see how noticeable the join is? Might not even be an issue with the background out of focus. 16' is long, even if you can get it you're going to need a truck to transport it.
It's for a white background, so blowing it out to hide the seam would be fine. In that case, I might try and place a 12' and 9' together and blow out the seam.
Good luck. Report how it turns out. If you do a good job of joining them you might even find the bokeh does half the job. But as morgan_moore points out, you might need to blow it out anyway depending on how it hangs.
Just to follow up, the shoot went well. I ended up rolling off two 20' pieces of a 12' wide backdrop, then taped the edges together, creating a 20' wide x 24' long piece of white paper. I hung it from a piece of 22' speed rail, and that did the trick.
