The black removes the light. Its not reflecting light.

So, for an example, you are on the beach. Its sunny out. The persons face will be evenly lit and there will be no contrast but very flat looking. To give some contrast, use the black side near the person to remove some of the light.

Thats the best way I could describe it
 
Thank you, I am going to order the same reflector kit you bought. Looks like a good deal and everything a person would need. Of course I will use a few white foam boards with it.

Thats negative fill... Also for white boards go to a Home depot and look for foam core, its usually 4x8. Cut it halfway and tape them together so you have a double sided reflector. I also used some white paint on one side to make it a softer white bounce. Works pretty good
