Laptop wireless connection help

Ok so i have this dell laptop running XP that has one of those wireless connections, wifi i think. So i always get a connection at school with no problem, until i went to vermont for the weekend. Now back at school here in new york the wireless connection wont connect.
Is there a way to enable/disable it? It always just did its thing on its own so i never learned how to work it. Help please.

go to control panel network connections and look for available wireless networks......when you find one then enable it. tah dah.
