Laptop Not Recognizing Cameras

A friend of mine is having a problem with his new IBM Thinkpad. It is not recognizing any firewire camera he attaches. The cameras ports are fine. The cables are fine. I lent him a PCMCIA Firewire card to see if his firewire ports were busted. The laptop recognized the PCMCIA card and installed it, but it still wouldn't see the camera. The USB port connects fine to an external camera, but anything firewire has no results. The latest graphic drivers have been installed. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you very much.

Do you mean the firewire drivers or videocard drivers? We reinstalled the videocard drivers but that didn't work. I'll try the firewire drivers. It's brand new laptop, it's strange that there would be conflicts with the ports.

He doesn't have a firewire harddrive or anything else that can test it. Resources are limited here.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Sometimes they don't get installed right.

Ya, off the self is buggy out of the gate.

Check the hardware device manager [with cam connected] and see if ya have any infamous yellow question marks. Likely have to adjust / update from there

i would say to definitely get your hands on anything else you can that uses firewire to see if in fact the firewire port might be working fine on the computer but in fact the one on the camera is blown.

it happened to me with my first dvx but luckily it was underwarranty.

We will reinstall the firewire drivers. Thanks No Ca$h and Dakota.

Matthew - the firewire port on the camera is fine because we checked it on my computer. Will check a few more things. Thanks.

Thanks, the cable was the first thing we tested. D'oh! Not it. The firewire port on the camera was the next thing we tested. Still waiting to hear if he's reinstalled the drivers. Will let you know. Thanks for everyone's interest in this problem.

WHen you say "not recognized", do you mean in his capture program, or does he not even get the "device connected" beep that XP puts out? ALways check obvious things, like is the camera turned on and set to "play" mode, are other cables plugged into camera (sometimes this can be aproblem if cam only serves one port at a time), did he plug in cam first and then power it on?, does cam have power?, ...

SOrry oif this is all stupidly obvious, but I don't know you or your friend. I have done some pretty bonehead things when I think something is busted, especially at 2am (or whatever time it is there).
