Laptop for HVX editing, HDD question!

Well its going to be an external HD. I would probably need the faster HD speed for multi clip editing at such right?

The DVCProHD codec is 100Mbps, so for each layer of that content you need that much sustained transfer speed, assuming you're using all of it. You'll use less if your project is 24fps, but not by much. To view a crossfade in 1080i60 you'd need 200Mbps of speed to watch at full frame rate in real time (plus overhead).

edit:
I'm getting 80MBps (640Mbps) sequential read times on the drives I edit with, according to HD Tach. I have no problems with three layers of 1080 on the timeline in Edius.

Wouldn't a Sata PCMCIA or other card attached to a SATA External be better? I would be worried that the Firewire or USB2 wouldn't be fast enough. Especially when rendering! It would take WAY longer to render from footage stored on a firewire or USB HD. I say get a SATA 7K RPM or higher, and a card to plug it in to your laptop. That's my plan anyway. If only my camera would hurry up and get here! It comes on monday! :)

Firewire would be plenty quick. The drives will burst at speeds faster than the bus can handle, but they certainly won't sustain speeds faster than 800Mbps.

I'm sort of perplexed as to why they would even offer a drive array like that with 5400 RPM drives.
