Laptop for DVRack

Re: Laptop for DVRack

Probably needs more RAM. I know 256 is the min. req., but Barry suggests 512 and I agree. Any XP machine really should have 512 RAM. The 1.5Ghz is just enough, but what if you need to upgrade to a future version of DVRack with greater requirements? I'd also prefer a Pentium. I always buy headroom when I can.
I suggest getting a better performing system even if you need to pay more.
Something else to consider if you plan on being in tough conditions is how well the laptop has performed in independent tests for things like being knocked around, dropped or having liquids spilled on it. I don't know about Toshiba, but Dell has scored well with many models. Its the main reason I buy them.

Re: Laptop for DVRack

That would barely work, but you can do a *lot* better on price than that. I got basically that same system, for $599 during one of the holiday weekend sales. You *have* to juice up the memory, that 256 "shared" just doesn't quite cut it, I added a 512mb memory stick from Crucial and it made a world of difference.

Wait for the next holiday weekend sale, and watch the ads from Office Depot, Best Buy, CompUSA, OfficeMax, Staples, Fry's, etc... somebody always has a $599 laptop offered, that meets the specs to run DV Rack.

I took another look at that Toshiba. The 40Gig drive is pretty small. Depending on what you'll be doing, of course, it would be better to have a BIG one. Uh, ...I mean a big hard drive. :-X

Re: Laptop for DVRack

Hey unix,

Also consider checking out the refurbished section on the Dell website. I recently just bought a laptop for a great deal: $590.00 gave me a 2.6Ghz Celeron Processor with 512RAM and a 40GB 5400RPM HD. Although I just bought this laptop so I can go places to do scriptwriting, I never though about using it with DVRack, which would be a great alternative to using the small lcd flipscreen on my XL2! You guys are always provoking thoughts in my head constantly ....
