Laptop editing?

Anyone run any editing software on the new so called "mobile" processor laptops? They seem to be powered down to conserve battery life. Does this reduced power consumption also translate into a slow, lagging system? :-/

Looking to grab a laptop to travel with and battery life is secondary to power. For example Intel has a Pentium 4 3.06GHz with hyper threading for a nice price but it's tagged as a "mobile" processor... What's the scoop on these?

Re: Laptop editing?

I don't run it off a battery, but my Sony VAIO 1.5GHz Centrino isn't that bad running Vegas. The only complaint I have is screen size...

Re: Laptop editing?

I'm running a mobile Athlon 64 with a 15.4" notebook, and it is unebleivably smooth and fast with Premiere, 3ds max, AE, PS, Vegas, ACID, and Cleaner. Nobody talks much about the AMD 64-bit CPU's, but they are a dream come true for anything graphics related. Try one out sometime...

Re: Laptop editing?

I've got the same setup, athlon 64 3200, 15.4" screen, and it runs just as fast as my desktop, when it's plugged in.

Re: Laptop editing?

Is that chip classified as "mobile"? I'm trying to figure out the limitations, if any, to mobile processors.

I don't care about pollution
I'm an air-conditioned gypsy
That's my solution
Watch the police and the tax man miss me
I'm mobile
Oooooh, yeah, hee!

Mobile, mobile, mobile yeah

I'm not familiar with the term "mobile" in regards to chips. I would *assume* that if a chip is in a laptop, then it is mobile (?).

I have a 3 year old 1GHz, 15" Mac Powerbook. I can say there is value in having a portable station that you can take anywhere. I have a few clients who hire me to videotape 'highlights' of their three day conferences which close with a video I edited the night before on my Powerbook.

Don't worry.  That album is only 34 years old.

And where would CSI be without it?

Re: Laptop editing?

Any up-to-date mobile precessor can kick ass and take names along with the desktops (especially the Athlon 64's). The thing that usually holds them back is HD speed. Unfortunately, many laptops still ship with 4,200 rpm HD's, which make the overall computer run slower than it should. If you upgrade to a 7,200 rpm though, you're cake...

And yes, the Athlon 64's in notebooks are classified as Mobile.

So I have noticed. >:(

A HD upgrade will be a must.

Re: Laptop editing?

bigger LCD, 64bit AMD or Hyperthreading Intel, faster memory, that's what you need for laptop. don't even bother with the battery, if u do, u will end up a half orange, half apple fruit, sounds not enough for both side.
oh one thing, instead get a very high price 7200rmp 2.5" drive, try to get 10000rmp 3.5 IDE HD with a good external enclosure device. i'm been using that for months, i can even bring more than one HD while i'm traveling.

ps: doesn't anyone can recoommand a insurance company for my dvx100a coverage while i'm traveling?
